Pumpkins donāt traditionally grow in Scotland so when I was growing up we carved turnips or ātumshiesā instead. It takes a bit more patience as the flesh is solid and pretty hard. After the kids carved their pumpkins yesterday, I had a hankering for going old school, and I carved this.

Pumpkin carving, as we know it today, originated in Ireland The tradition is tied to an Irish folktale about a man named āStingy Jackā where people would carve faces into turnips to ward off his wandering spirit, and when Irish immigrants came to America, they began using pumpkins instead due to their availability.
