5 years ago i took my last drink. I was due to check into jail to serve a 30 day sentence for 3 counts of vehicular assault and a DUI. I drank for 4 days straight knowing i wouldn’t be able to touch a drink while i served my time. I had no intentions to quit drinking, i tried to many times before and failed everytime. While i was in jail i started to feel pretty damn good. After i got out i had to do a drug and alcohol assessment, they guy told me i need to do intense out patient classes and attend AA meetings, i lied to him about my drinking but he seen right through me. I blew my lid at the guy cussed him out and stormed out the building. I didn’t attend anything he told me i needed to do he threatened to turn me in for non-compliance with the courts, i had no choice but to go. I was the guy in the corner that didn’t want to be there, thought i was better than everyone in the building, didn’t listen, didn’t speak, just say there on my “high horse”. After going for a few months i started listening and realized everyone was in the same place i was. Everything clicked that i needed to be there, so i started telling my story and listening to the others. I met great friends and lost friends in the program. I thank the guy that gave me my drug and alcohol assessment every time i see him. If i can do it you can do it. 5 years being a better father, husband, friend and son
