Hello friends, I am in Las Vegas and just had breakfast at a place on the Strip. They offer an alcohol free beer called Elvis. I ordered an Elvis and my breakfast while on the phone with a friend who was telling me she needs major surgery. I do drink AF beers and they have never caused an issue. It was $5 on the menu, which I thought was quite good, especially for Vegas. I finished my avocado toast breakfast and asked for the bill. I saw that I had been charged $12.50 for the Elvis. Before I asked the server, I took another look at the menu and saw that in addition to the AF âElvis,â there is also a 6.5% âElvis Juiceâ beer and that is what I was served. I should have been more careful. I know to order a Heineken zero vs. Heineken, but didnât realize there were different types of Elvis. My alcoholic mind was already telling me, itâs done, might as well drink today but I am stopping myself now. When my adult alcoholic son dropped me at the airport yesterday, we pinkie swore twice that we wouldnât drink. I will let him know what happened but more importantly, I will not let this unintended slip give me an excuse to drink more.
Wise choice!! It can happen when we arenât paying as much attention as we should. Glad it didnât go south!
That was a good catch on your part! Good on ya for now letting it trip you off the wagon!
Awe man! That really is not your fault and good job not just giving up completely!
I got goosebumps reading your sorry, as I could imagine myself being in that Situation and having an immediate thought âagh might as well drink more today, whateverâ. You are so strong to have not given up, wow
Thank you all for your support. Thankfully, my head is in the right place. I carried on with my day without being tempted to give in and have more alcohol, even as I was offered complimentary prosecco on the way back to my room tonight. Iâll take that as a win!
Very glad to hear youâve not faltered after this! That shows you mean it my friend, good job!
Small sidenote: I would reconsider things like early morning/daytime af drinking. They are leftovers from our drinking days, nothing else. I do also enjoy an af beer here and there, special occasion type deal. I refrain from af shots w colleagues or guests during a busy shift. One for me is an enjoyable beverage. The other is clearly the exact same behaviour as before, only it brings no âreliefâ.
Never stop examining yourself!
Good point!
This resonated with me. Well done for not just thinking âf@ck itâ. I like alcohol free beers and this kind of thing worries me, someone giving me the wrong drinkâŚ
Well done and thanks for sharing
Not a fan of AF , maybe order a coffee with your breakfast ? , dont know why you didnt notice the taste ? wish you well
This is a good lesson for everyone. ALWAYS confirm there is no alcohol when given a drink, no matter where you are. They donât care, theyâre in the business to make money. I donât trust anyone with my sobriety.
It was an honest mistake. It was noon and almost 100 degrees, so when I saw an AF beer on the menu, I decided to try it. The taste was very citrusy. If i hadnât noticed the price on my bill, I would have never known I had consumed alcohol. I know many are not a fan of AF beer/wine but I like that more restaurants are offering them as an option. Thanks for the well wishes.
You will know next time , i think the brewers are getting the taste of AF and normal stuff similar now be careful . 100 Degrees id have to put on my kilt and tee shirt for that temp lol
Yes, lesson learned!
Thank you for sharing this!
I think itâs absolutely an incredible thing to know you consumed that on accident and not just go to the eff it mentality of having more on purpose due to that accidental slip. Staying on the beam is sooooo important. For me that mental game of, well I had one and it was fine sooooo I can do it again would likely be strong after this to trick me into going back into my addiction. Itâs cunning, baffling and powerful.
My sponsor reset her sober counter on an AF drink as she was drinking it to replace actual alcohol so to her, she was romanticizing a drink and not letting go of that old lifestyle. While that may be extreme, these little accidents that get shared remind me why itâs important for me personally to not play with that fire.
A few weeks ago I was out to dinner with friends and they suggested I get a virgin drink. My gut instantly said no. Iâm reminded in this post of how easily it could be detrimental to my sobriety, even if it was on accident. I have no interest in getting burned so it was a good reminder for me to keep sticking with my water to ensure my sobriety stays in tact.
We all learn by sharing our experiences and I thank you very much for sharing yours.
