Yeah, Leadbelly is incredible. It’s pretty much impossible to come up with a top 10 bands/musicians list, but Leadbelly would 100% be on mine
And another great artist! Have you seen Imitation of Life. Used to be my aunt’s favourite film and it gets you right in the eyes. Has Mahalia in it.
Pink - Sober
No, not heard of it. Thanks for the recommendation
And thanks for the warning
@James6 I really only knew her from singing “Jolene” and then fell in love w this recording, her, and her performance! Watched it a lot during lockdown 2020
Love the flags at Glastonbury.
The flags are amazing and you see the same ones year after year! We have 2 young kids but the plan is to start taking them to the festival in our campervan in 2023. This is Bumble the van!
Exciting! Hi Bumble the van! Easy to spot!
Indeed! That will be the ultimate test for my sobriety. I’m not quite there yet.
Have a great Sunday.
Sunday morning one. @James6 I don’t go to big festivals no more, too massive for me. But I still love smaller ones, like HaldernPop in Germany, 7000 people max. First time I went there sober in summer 2019 I was anxious but it was a revelation. Enjoyed the music so much more. Slept much better. Woke up and got up with the sunrise and happy about it. Everything was better about it. Hope you’ll learn to love it sober too. I saw Mario Batkovic play late at night, magic. Here he is at another small festival I’d like to go some day, Into The Great Wide Open at the Dutch isle of Vlieland. Music starts at 1:50.
Very cool, I like this I love the accordian.
Same here. I haven’t been to a big festival for years. I used to go to All Tomorrows Parties when they did those, and Supersonic in Birmingham was my favourite. Those were the right size for me, a few thousand at the most. I think i’d probably find one of the massive ones a bit overwhelming.
Hey Menno - I hear you on some festivals getting too big. Glastonbury isn’t what it used to be… (I sound like my grandad) it’s become somewhat sanitised since the BBC got more and more involved. But that’s the way of the world I and I get it. Also the chances of losing a child are greatly increased at a bigger festival…
It would be great to take the van into Europe and try out some new festivals. Any suggestions welcome.
Nice… this is a great tune. Cocoa Sugar from these guys is an amazing album!
I’m not sure which ones survived 2 summers of COVID shutdown TBH. Haldern Pop in August is always a great one. They always have great programming of upcoming bands.
Not sure how the ticket sales for next summer will go. (provided there are no more lockdowns). In 2019 there was some saturation happening, too much festivals around. Tickets for Haldern Pop always used to sell out in a day or so when sale started around Christmas, in 2019 it didn’t sell out totally for the first time in at least a decade.
I’d advise to try and check schedules of some of your favourite bands. I always loved to go to Belgium, Rock Werchter being the biggest festival I used to go. Like Glastonburry it grew too large for my liking as I grew older myself. Last time I was there 70,000 on the field. Too much. But there is an insane number of smaller festivals in Belgium (mainly Flanders) too. Always a great atmosphere.
In the Netherlands there are loads too. I loved Hongerige Wolf, on the tip of the North of the country. Maybe a bit too Dutch for you. The isles of Vlieland and Terschelling both have some great stuff. (Into the Great Wide Open and Oerol) . There’s many nice festivals throughout the country these days. Best Kept Secret (not a secret anymore), Down the rabbit hole, Dauwpop just a few examples. Maybe meet you somewhere in 2022
Here’s another favourite from Haldern with some of my favourite artists playing together:
Thanks! I was just thinking as I posted this that I hadn’t listened to anything since Dead. I shall check it out.
