Thirty-one years ago this morning I sat in a circle of friends on a beach under palm trees in Pokai Bay, Hawaii. The group was named Courage to Change and I decided it was time to change so I finally surrendered and accepted my final white chip.
Have I been grateful every day since then? Not hardly. We are talking about life after all. However recovery taught me to be grateful for the small things that I overlooked as unimportant during my active addiction. That led to a better approach to life which led to a better life.
Today I’m grateful for more than I could ever list. I’m grateful for every soul here and elsewhere in recovery because we are family. I’m grateful to be breathing. I’m exceedingly grateful to have 10 months cig free. I’m grateful for the ups and downs of life because it has been one hell of a ride.
