I understand this Jan. I was bullied at school, I was kicked out of one school and sent to a “special” school. Apparently I had emotional problems.
Way I know now, but didn’t understand then was the fact that it was my reaction that was not right.
Ok they shouldn’t have bullied but my reaction made them do it more.

I think the capacity for empathy plays a big part in all this. If someone purposely tries to offend me, I’m usually curious who hurt them. If I say something that offends someone else and they are reactive, I try to see where they are coming from and put myself in their shoes. Perspective shifting can really help. Of course, these are ideals I hope to live by and I’m a work in process like everyone else.

Same goes for if I find something offensive but that offense wasn’t intended. Where are they coming from and what is their perspective compared to mine? And how can we communicate these things in an effective way?

I responded very wrong too it too. I was a whiny childish kid who almost looked for things to get offended by. And I was very aggressive which they found hilarious

I grew up in Essex so I get quite a few Essex jokes and stereotypes when I’m asked where I’m from. “Why does Essex Man use so much hairspray? To catch everything that goes over his head” “What’s the difference between an Essex boy and an Essex girl? Essex girl has a higher sperm count” etc. Thing was though that my inner geezer couldn’t get offended by all the bant because everyone else I was growing up with were from Essex too!

Shit slinging amongst friends and cohorts is a WHOLE ‘nother subject matter! I grew up in Michigan where it’s gloomy and cold most of the year and you get creative with the dark humor. My husband and I are co-founders of The Horrible People’s Club with some of our friends and the insults fly! I guess I’m speaking more from a recoveryforum/vulnerable/sensitive strangers online point in my above comments. Though it’s cool there are people comfortable enough with each other to banter here, of course.

I do apologize to @Conor689908 and to all for the screenshot I shared showing one definition of Irish twins, that indicated it was originally a derogatory term. I should have thought twice about that and selected a better explanation; I should have read through them all vs. selecting the first one I came across. I was just meaning to give an explanation of the term since he asked about it. Sorry about that.

Figured I’d put in my 2 cents. One of the leaders of my church spoke about being offended in a General Conference a few years back. I’ve posted the video here:
Aside from this, our General Conference is happening today and tomorrow if anyone cares to tune in. They are being live streamed from Salt Lake City. There are 5 different 2 hour sessions you can choose from or watch them all, since there will be different messages at all of them.

If you haven’t been a member long or not particularly active, sometimes members can delete themselves thru their profile. However in most cases, a moderator will need to delete your posts and then your account.

No headache for me, thankfully. A program does the work of deleting larger accounts. It would be a loss for the forum however…as it has been when other long time members with a lot of valuable input left and had their accounts deleted. But such is life…it goes on…as will TS when others of us leave. One hopes people simply leave as opposed to deleting their account, but to each their own.
