I don’t think he was being sarcastic. I thought your comment was well thought out and valid.

I don’t follow you on the sarcasm. Did I miss something? I’ve been known to have a stupid monent or two.

Edit: Ah, misunderstanding. I’m sincere in what I said man. I don’t jest with these things.

It was moved off that particular thread as off topic but the conversation you wanted to have is very much happening! No one is asking anyone to shut up

I’ve read through the whole thread. I don’t think anyone is trying to silence you. People are sharing their opinions on it, just like you. That doesn’t mean that they are telling you that your opinion is wrong.

I saw that thread. And the Iwo Jima picture. I know it wasn’t started by you. I guess I should have directed the silencing comment to the OP, but the idea applies to all.

Sharing an objecting opinion and having it relocated doesn’t really silence someone either. The comments weren’t deleted, just moved. This happens all the time to keep topics pure. This is the reason this topic is going, because it’s separate and distinct from the Original Thread.

The comment may have been about guns, but we know that the topic often sparks debate. I think relocating that discussion was a wise choice, so as to keep the original thread intact.

The thread is called firearms enthusiasts. So anti-gun stuff is not in the spirit of the thread. Hopefully we can agree though given this topic is now at over 100 posts that no one has been asked to stay silent on the discussion aspect.

I’m into the REALLY old boxes now (stuff I didn’t send with the movers because I knew I’d be throwing out almost all of it) and coincidentally came across this cartoon that my uncle/godfather in Ireland drew for me ~20 years ago (Dad’s sister’s husband). How timely, given the hot issue of the day…

He used to do cartoons etc for the local papers sometimes. Sadly, cancer took him about 5 years ago. He was a good man. Keeping this one.

I mean, I can start?

It’s difficult to draw hard lines, unfortunately. Like, personally I think that people should be able to show off their gains in their gym selfies. I’ve unfollowed the thread, because it used to be triggering to me. There are other things I think should be hard line not allowed, like pics of substances/drugs/alcohol/porn/etc. But, when should we ban pictures of food, just because there are eating disorders here?

Have you ever seen someone shot dead when you were 11 it’s great therapy

And I think some of us ask that you respect that some of us have been deeply affected and traumatized by guns. You don’t have to understand that, just respect it.

I don’t think the two have to necessarily be related. A lot of people collect other types of weapons, and they can be used for violence as well. That doesn’t necessarily mean they are inherently evil or malevolent. One person can find peace somewhere, where someone else with a different experience can feel nothing but anxiety. You can’t take something from someone, just because your experience has been different.

I just think guns have no place on a sobriety forum

I think that’s a super important point. I mean I’m not pro-gun but I can see a distinction between people shooting legally, in a safe and controlled way, and violence. I guess you could draw a parallel with martial arts/ boxing - some people engage in it in a way that is really healthy for them but for others can use it in a way that is dangerous and destructive. I imagine it is easier for me to make that distinction as someone who has not experienced gun violence trauma.

From a moderator perspective, to anyone who has experienced this type of trauma, please know that the thread is not intended in any way to be a glorification of violence. That is not in the spirit of the thread nor the rules of the forum. The intention was actually to keep images of guns off of other threads (e.g. sober selfies, which is where the original post was moved from).
