Feel I'm caving already

My wife drank all through my first 5 years of sobriety. I always use to asked the server to serve my sparkling water in a wine glass with lemon while she drank, “her usual.”

Fair enough. Enjoy your day and that yummy Mexican cuisine. Hope there is bean dip as well:winking_face_with_tongue: to go with queso

doing this as I have walked through many challenges has helped me not drink many, many times.

I did it! Still sober today!! My head is pounding and not getting enough sleep. But at least I’m sober. Whew!

@Dazercat yes! Chips and queso! I’m finding that without the ADHD medication and without drinking, my appetite is in full force, especially since the root canals are pretty much healed now. I’m so stuffed. Lol. I almost ordered a Shirley Temple, but I was so thirsty that water just sounded better. So I take it your wife no longer drinks?

@Von100 I passed on the bean dip, but we had refried beans. Does that count? Lol

@JasonFisher It certainly helps me, too!

She’ll have 2 years in November. She’s working the: “if I drink I can’t see the grandson program.” My daughter is a hard ass. She also reads tons of books about other people’s stories of addiction. Tons of them.

In my early sobriety I was so focused on my recovery that it wasn’t so bad. But the I needed Al-Anon as her drinking progressed, as it does, out of control. That’s why I started that thread. “Are you affected by a loved one who drinks.”

I’m glad she was able to turn things around. I’m sure that thread will be most useful to me. I started at the bottom of the thread earlier and I know I missed so much. Think I might need to start from the beginning. Thanks for sharing.

Hubby just asked what I was writing down so I read to him Autobiography in Five Short Chapters. He said, “Oh! I get it! It’s like that Jimmy Buffett song… it’s nobody’s fault. Next time he sings…it could be my fault. Next time… it’s all my fault.” I said, “Yes babe. It’s just like that.” Lol. Oh dear. I couldn’t help but laugh. Lol

I can relate to this…

My wife and I used to hit the Mexican spots all the time.

Since I quit drinking, we don’t hit certain places anymore, and she has slowed down to support me.

She only has the occasional cocktail, glass of wine or bourbon (we’re in bourbon country) - and only when we’re out.

She doesn’t drink at home at all anymore, so that it won’t be there for me (she’ll still drink at friends’ homes though)…

I asked her (with no pressure) why she doesn’t just quit altogether. She said she likes the social nature of drinking - I can’t blame her; so did I.

My husband told me last night he is going to cut back on alcohol, too. I’m so happy about that. When he says cut back, though, he means waiting until 5 pm to start drinking rather than starting at 2 pm. But hey, that’s definitely a start! Lol. It would be great to not have alcohol in the home at all. But he won’t go for that right now. Hopefully in time, though.
