The Village

I have a village like any other
With its church and its tower
Its square with its citizens of noble birth
His little cafes are crazy characters
His eternal drunks are neighbors
Where everyone can still greet everyone
Because everyone knows everyone
And where you are not safe anywhere
It’s a village like any other

It’s a village full of venom
It’s a village full of venom
Where they talk to everyone
And true for appearances
A good name for the eyes of the street
So much is left, so much is done
You are being watched
They follow your steps
They taste your words and spy on your clothes
Be careful, my boy, that will be a scandal
It’s a village like any other

It’s a village where you get scared
When winter comes
The days are chilling
The sun is hidden
In graying veils of rain and wind
Then the streets become so quiet
Then the shutters remain carefully closed
Then the old ones remain silent and death can come
It gets so chilly then
You can smell the fear
It’s a village like any other

Yet it makes you a bit sad
When you are away for a while
Because you’ve known so many good friends there
You had your shelter there
You knew every street
And you won’t forget that so quickly

And when the sky ripped open
And the sun suddenly appeared
Then it became so different
Then it became a party
With big gestures from everyone’s friends
A bunch of happy people, a bunch of mad children

Then it was a village like no other
Then it was a village like no other

I love Morgan Wade, her voice and her music. She’s a great example of a young woman who realized while she’s still young that the drinking had to go. The lyrics resonate deeply with me. “… but I won’t shut my mouth, is it a rule down in the South that you can’t talk about your mental health?” Sadly, it was a rule in the South I lived in.

Here’s some of her story…

My mom listened to this album on repeat while she was getting a divorce. I knew every single lyric to all her songs by age 5
20 years later I finally understand them! Haha
