Getting to One Month

Hi all! New here, so not sure if this is the right place for this, but I wanted to document by sobriety journey from the beginning.

I’ve spent the last couple of weeks working on and off to get sober. The good news (not really haha) is that when I have been drinking, I am no longer drinking to excess. However, I still don’t like the way I’ve been feeling when I wake up the day after a glass or two of wine once or twice a week (despite the fact that this is significantly less than the several bottles of wine and multiple cocktails I would have per week previously) and am ready just to commit to giving it up permanently. It doesn’t benefit me, and I don’t feel good after.

Planning to use this thread to document my experience getting to one month sober - so far, I am officially one day sober (will be two at midnight!). Working hard and will be getting there.

Welcome! Keep us updated on your progress and spend some time reading around the forum - there are some really helpful conversations, links and tips!

Great to hear you are working on getting on the sober path! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes: For me, any period of ‘controlled’ drinking eventually degenerated into ‘not at all controlled’ drinking, and honestly, not thinking and negotiating about drinking was easier in the end.
What’s YOUR plan?
Lots of great info in this thread, why not check it out? :purple_heart:

Welcome! I just recently got sober myself. Almost at 2 months. My drinking landed me in the hospital having to medically detox. Had two seizures trying to quit on my own. While your story is vastly different you’re still in the right place. This community is so supportive of everyone’s journey and a great place to talk/vent about anything

Back to day one…I keep thinking that I can just have a balance with it, and want a “normal” night out…except I don’t even like sitting around for hours at the bar and drinking. We spent four hours at the wine bar last night (I had three glasses, which while still less than usual for that time period, was three too many!) and while it was nice to be in the company of people, sitting there like that was not so much fun. And I was tired long before I left, which if I had chosen not to drink would’ve meant we’d have gone home at a reasonable hour.

So…back to day one. But what did I learn?

  • I don’t like drinking - it actually isn’t fun and prior to these past few weeks and attempts to stop I’d never actually stopped and thought about it.
  • A regular morning routine that includes exercise - makes it so much easier to hit the bed with a sober head. This morning, I got up and journaled, read, meditated, and did some pilates, and it does make it so much easier not to have urges or to at least sit with them as they come up.

Here’s to actually doing the dang thing!

I am there with you. Actually, you are ahead of me. I’m not changing my sober date at least till I’m sober. It doesn’t make sense to change it every day. Every day I’m sad about the day before and feeling guilty and shame, even if I “moderated”. Every day is day one. I started a journal…wrote 2 days. I’ve tried meetings… 3 per week. I’ve tried to “leave it in the hands of my higher Power.” My spouse drinks and I’m finding it more than difficult to stop with drinking in the home. So I’m waiting on a miracle, I guess. I wish you the best!

Now at three days - feeling good so far. Went out to see a jazz concert last night with my boyfriend and one of our friends, and when his friend asked if we wanted drinks and I said no, he seemed surprised. I simply explained I’m not drinking, and stuck to it - proud of that! I feel so much better without it (and I know tapering off had already been helping, but going without it really does feel so much better on my body. So, here’s to three days of hitting the bed with a sober head!
