Ground control to Major Tom : What is the concencus on non alcoholic beer or wine?

Thank you. My quest is how to come out as an alcoholic and obviously I am uncomfortable with it. How observant of you! I am content with water and tea, I don’t see the point of drinking unless I get drunk, including NA stuff. So, like all my friends here suggested, not a good idea for many reasons. Point taken. Thank you all for the input and the support.

To me near beers are just a means to fit in with a lifestyle I am no longer living.

Go, enjoy a ginger ale, water, coke, chai tea.

“You’re not going to have a beer?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t want to drink.”

If that’s not good enough for someone, I don’t need or want to be around them. I don’t need to explain why I’m not drinking past not wanting too.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I am a glass maniac and I enjoyed the glasses as much as I enjoyed my drinks. So cute right? Speaking of awkwardness, I thought of asking the bartender quietly to put cranberry juice into a red wine glass. Now, that could be done at a dinner table too I think. See, necessity is the mother of inventions. Lol.
Seriously, thank you for all your input. I am grateful.

Non alcoholic beer and wine is for non alcoholics in my opinion. Why simulate a behavior that you are trying to avoid.

For me I dont care what people think so I dont pretend to drink.

Just my 2 cents. And speaking of cent’s it’s about the same price as the real stuff.

My favorites now are club soda with a lime (or Bubbly water that’s flavored) and the occasional ginger beer. It contains no alcohol but is awesome!

In India, we call tea served with milk, chai, and if we make it with spices, it is masala chai or desi chai. My aunty makes the best masala chai. Now I am craving it :blush:

Meh. Its not really worth it. I was really really craving a drink last week and bought a 6 pack of na beer, because I was at the store and I knew I’d buy the real thing if not. I had a few sips and threw the rest out because it tastes like straight ass. But I didnt drink. I think using it early in sobriety isnt a great idea for many reasons.

I have had a couple of na heinkens and they are great. Never made me drink alcoholic drinks.Only drink them when I am out socialising with drinkers and feel absolutely great. Well everyone else on here saying they are the worse I don’t mind them at all. Makes a change as I do drink soda and lime but sometimes it’s nice to just have a beer without the shit of alcohol effects of troubles that usually follow.

@LyLyC
Haha, yes I have an unopened box of wine glasses I bought just before I quit. I wasn’t planning on quitting even though I wanted to so bad, I thought I never could but something happened. Something minor compared to million ridiculous stories, I got drunk in front of someone who is dear to me. I was soooo embarrassed. She never said anything and continued to be the gentle and kind person she is. Few days after that I was out of booze at home and I did not want to drink anymore. A switch in my brain just flipped and that was it. I went to bed and there was my first day. And, yes, I have used jars as glasses as opposed to plastic crap that makes anything tastes like shit. Also agreed that the cost is unnecessary and the taste is nothing enticing to me.

@Frank68
I shouldn’t care about what people think, you are right. I like club soda with lime too.

@NowIsTheTime
Thank you for the information. Cultural background tells us the wonderful details.
I would die for your aunts masala chai!

@Beechasebee
I am glad you resisted to the urge. I agree that keeping away from the behavior is a good idea. Who knows, before I know it I could fool myself to that one drink. It is like falling into a ditch where there is a road to walk comfortably.

@Natbeanuk
Never tried the NA Heineken as I was in it for the buzz. Soda and lime seems to be the consensus.

I used to have an extensive shot glass collection that I built up over a long time. I threw every last one of them away after I got out of rehab number 1 (maybe 2)

They’re labelled non-alcoholic, but don’t they actually have small akounts of alcohol in them? It can’t be avoided completely during the brewing process.

Yeah I’d forget about it. You should never have to explain not poisoning yourself. Plenty of people don’t drink because they don’t like it. If they are that uncomfortable, maybe it’s them and not you.

I’ve drank NA beer before when sober long term and it didn’t trigger me wanting the real thing (at least not at the time I was drinking it. Who knows how that affected my relapse down the linel) however it did give me a nasty gut ache much like the real thing. In my personal story, it was a good substitute when I was feeling really left out in social situations, but I’d much rather have club soda and lime.
This time around I’m avoiding NA beer because I realize that in my sobriety, I have to be all in. No NA beer, no marijuana, no junk food, no excuses.
