Grumpy A-holes (quitting cigarettes/ nicotine products) (Part 1)

Ooo I like 1am you…she’s ballsy!

While this may not be your favorite idea in the long term….is there anyway you can get your hands on some biscotti for the mornings? Dipped in some tea or coffee I feel like they can be a sweet little ritual in the morning.

I used to like to put on my comfy sweatshirt, go outside and sit on the back of my trunk (I lived in the woods) and smoke a cigarette with my morning coffee…especially when hungover.

When I quit drinking and then smoking, I would go out in my comfiest clothes (sometimes even with a blanket!) and drinking my coffee while having a biscotti and listening to the morning birds.

It’s fallen away for some time, but was a real comfort in the early days.

That is a great idea! I haven’t got to long term thinking yet. On Friday I bought enough crisps, sweets and snacks to keep me bouncing off the walls for a month although I am going through it much quicker than that :see_no_evil: So an extra biscuit in the morning definitely won’t hurt. And this is my morning view right now to sit out and have a cup of tea and a biscuit to :sparkling_heart:

Will sort out the sugar issue later!

OMG today I was a real grumpy a-hole. Really lost my shit with the poor bf. I mean I think he was a bit unkind but I took it very, very. very personally. He also mentioned my nicotine deprivation which unfortunately made me much worse. But we sorted it out.

Today I have felt sad and sleepy and wiped out. But the sun has been shining and I’ve got some bits done that needed doing. Dinner nearly ready, will get an early night tonight and listen to the Jason Vale hypnotherapy thing for night times after quitting. Hopefully tomorrow will be a little less rough on both of us!

Reviving this thread as ill be checking in about 17 times tomorrow, was gonna wait a few more days for 60 sober days from the other mess but something told me tomorrow is day 1. Putting my quit out there worked for alcohol so hopeful writing/typing it out here will strengthen my vigilance.

Hey, I’m glad to see this. I was watching this thread knowing my quit date was coming. I’m feeling Monday or Tuesday for me. I’m close to 4 months no alcohol and the time feels right. Lead the way Joel! I’ll be right behind you. :muscle:t3:

Blowing my own horn but also showing @Jdeanj Joel and @TrustyBird Emilie it can be done. It’s a hard one to beat but if I can do it you sure can too! A tip from me: Have your Quit Kit ready! It’s in this thread a couple times already, but who cares. Hope it helps you some. Wishing you all success!

(found this on Quitnet, a sadly now deceased forum aimed at quitting smoking that helped me greatly almost 7 years ago)

The Quit Kit

Repost by Grammax6

Welcome Newbies! Ready to quit? Then you need a Quit Kit!

It isn’t a matter of just slapping on a patch or chewing some nic gum. Every behavior you can think of is tied to your smoking. We smoked because we were happy, sad, mad, hurt, tired, sick, bored…etc. You need to replace those habits. Take a day to make a plan.

We call it a Quit Kit. It can be anything you want. Get creative and really think about it. Some things folks have used is nicotine gum. You can buy regular gum the same size, color and flavor so you can go back and forth between the two. If you are using the patch, make sure you have an extra patch in the office, in your purse, or in your wallet, for those days when you have forgotten to put one on in the morning. It happens more than you think! Have lozenges available for those high stress / high craving times.

Have some Red Vines to ‘smoke’. Or cut up a straw into thirds…especially during high trigger times like driving. Sometimes it feels good to just hold it if you are accustomed to always having a smoke in your hand. Grab your favorite CDs or tapes to put in your car so you can put one in and sing out loud. My favorite was dancing and singing at the same time. Your brain cannot do a third thing, so thinking about smoking just disappears.

To keep your mind and hands busy, go to Michael’s or some other craft store and look for things to do. Buy something that interests you; rug hooking kits, scrap booking stuff, or Christmas stocking kits for the grand kids. Or, get some coloring books and colored pencils or felt tip pens. Stained glass, floral, tropical fish or Native American motif coloring books are available everywhere now. They make you want to do a good job. Dora the Explorer would make me want to scribble on her face. LOL!

Make a list of everything that needs to be done, or you want to do around the house. Go through each room and write down everything from cleaning out drawers and closets to painting, rearranging or redecorating. Same with the garage and yard work. Once you have your list, break it down into 5-15 minutes segments so nothing becomes overwhelming.

Make baggies of crunchy foods to satisfy your mouth so they are at work and handy to grab. Carrots, celery, chex mix, pretzel sticks (you can hold those like a cig), gum, etc. They need to be ready to just grab at any given time.

This is important!!! The Three Post Rule: When you are craving and really shaky, post and click the “I’m craving and need some help” box. Wait for at least 3 response posts before you make a decision to purchase cigarettes or to smoke. Most times, you will be fine once you read the posts (keeps you from dwelling). If not…post again and wait for 3 more.

Once you have all these things figured out you will be well prepared to handle anything and you don’t even have to think…just look at your list… Keep 1 copy at work, 1 at home, 1 in your purse or wallet, 1 in the car.

If you did one day, you can do 2. If you did 3, you can do one more. No future tripping. You can’t do a darn thing about tomorrow until it gets here. Today is a good time to quit but if you feel you can’t, then take tomorrow to put together your Quit Kit and quit the day after. Don’t set a quit date out there for 2 weeks, 1 month, etc. All you do is make yourself crazy in your head by stressing over that date. You know you can do this.

Thanks Menno! My quit date will be between Monday and Wednesday and I can use my Tuesday off to put together that quit kit. I’ll send pics when it is ready and thanks always for your support. :muscle:t3::clap:t3:

Great inspiration, thank you!

I moved my date til tomorrow so last nicotine will be around 9:00 tonight. I went to the sweets shop and got some jolly ranchers and gobstoppers today. My plan is to drink tea instead of coffee as coffee has always been a nicotine compliment. I’m going to eschew gum or patches to try and get past the 3 day mark when the body gets clean (technically) of the substance.

And I am going to post here when cravings get rough. Psychologically it worked for me to stop drinking to take the cliche ODAT approach of not looking at quitting for life but for today, even to the point of telling myself I can drink tomorrow if I want but I won’t today. Seemed to make it less daunting.

Good luck and it’d be great to have success with you and cheer one another on.

It’s nice to know I am accountable to someone in my quitting. I will also post when cravings get intense. It’s exciting to think that in a few days I could be rid of a 26ish year habit. I started at 17 and with the exception of a few short attempts never fully stopped, until this week… Lets do this.

I sympathize and am sorry for the hard stuff in your life. And I understand you’re putting your plans on hold. Just know there will never be a perfect time to quit and there will always be triggers and craves and tough times. Success with your business and take care.
