I think quitting tobacco does something especially nefarious to our brains. You are a champ for pushing through and now you never have to live this day again.
Good job reaching out, I’m sorry it was a tough day but I’m glad it’s getting better.
Good job friend. ![]()

In Dec 2019 I made it 26 days. I looked back in Grumpy A-holes part one.
I started smoking when I was 15. I quit when I was 26. I was having trouble taking a deep satisfying breath, so I quit. At 41 I started smoking when I was going through a divorce. I smoked a pack a day, sometimes more. I’m 56 now.
It is easier to quit smoking crack than it is cigarettes. Way easier!
I haven’t craved smoking crack in decades, but I still get cravings for cigarettes.
That is a wonderful number of days Jason! So grateful that you are working on your no smoking journey. It is a super hard fixation to get rid of. It is a a strong ass craving even months / years after the quit date. Just remember that we enjoy the feeling of fresh air in our lungs - how amazing the deep clean breathing is!
Keep up the amazing work ![]()
Amazing accomplishment. I started smoking at 14/15 as well. On and off from then right through to my now 45 years… Mostly on vapes the last ten years. Though I also didn’t smoke for some blocks of several years in between. It’s so difficult.
I’m 7 days in today. ![]()
Congrats on a week free! @Tragicfarinelli
@JasonFisher please keep leading the way
Nicotine is a bi+@$
I’m glad you made it!
Those early days, like the first week especially are hard earned days, hour, minutes.
Its so easy to let our addicted thinking justify smoking and throw those hard earned early days aside with the intention of quitting again.
For me the years in between my next attempts flew by. When I picked up during my divorce, I thought it would be easy to quit again. I was wrong.
One week! ![]()
For me, because I gave up everything else, I made smoking into my last Vice that was all l had left. It was hard to let go of.
Even though I still get cravings and I miss certain things, I wont talk about because I don’t want to trigger cravings for anyone. The thought of actually smoking repulses me. Our third guy on the boat smokes. Even though Id rather he didn’t, It doesn’t trigger me. He is as respectful as he can be about smoking away from me on a boat.
It does get easier.
Thank you. I mean the worst is that I know I’m irritable as we had argument number two within 24 hours here. We normally don’t argue so this is new. I’m finding everything irritating at the moment.
Apparently it’s to do with muscles tensing, nicotine rewires your muscle receptors. So now they are seizing up in tension without it. I’m doing a breath-work class tonight live. I’m looking forward to the release of tension from that.
Also I’ve done a hard HIIT exercise class this morning to get some crap out my system. I’ve only had two nicotine losenges today since getting up at 7am, so that’s like 7.5 hours. I think that’s pretty good, I’m trying to monitor use of them.
Breath-work will be good.
Holding my breath helped me get through hard cravings, now I like to meditatate and focus on my breathing. Deep breaths, in through my nose and exhale through my mouth. I can feel a huge difference in my lung capacity now.
Because smoking was so intertwined with everything I did it helped me break other bad habits too.
quitting was hard, but worth every struggle.
I’m thinking when was the last time I craved a smoke. Must have been in the last year but I don’t remember it. After 3431 smoke- and nicotine free days I dare to say I’m free from nicotine. But I’m sure that I’d be right back where i was should I ever try one now.
Keep working towards zero nicotine friend. You’re doing great. Nicotine IS the most addictive substance I know. So much so that the huge majority of smokers that come to the detox where I work, don’t think they can or want to stop, even when they are forced to during their admission. They already decided it’s too hard and will start as soon as treatment ends. Or delude themselves by thinking smoking is nice. Still, most smokers (and vapers) quit. It is possible. I discovered the internet and online peer support as my main tool in September 2015. And haven’t looked back. And while it took me years to finally understand I wasn’t just addicted to smoking, I am an addict per se. And needed to quit all.
I rationalized to myself that i would only get cancer if i quit smoking bc the people i know were diagnosed after quiting. Logic??? I think not.
Nicotine was harder for me than booze or weed and i had a 12step program to help me.
