Hi,
I am not sure if this is the right place to post?
I can’t find a place that is for new people to say “hi”. So apologies if this is wrong.
I am someone who has relied on alcohol most of my adult life to manage stress, self medication I suppose.
I was ill a few years ago with covid in it’s first run and had a PE, and developed a heart arrhythmia.
I didn’t drink during that time, and am on blood thinners and was put on a beta blocker.
Last year I felt I had recovered a lot and if anything the beta blockers were maybe slowing me down. I did a year of a part time MA and put thoughts of my health to one side, which in a way was good… but with lack of focus and stress I started habitually drinking regularly again.
I finally got around to telling my GP practice about coming off the beta blockers and was sent for an ecg.
I fully expected it to be normal, I had convinced myself that any heart issues post covid were temporary and had settled.
But I was wrong. I still have the arrhythmia and the GP is sending me back to cardiology.
She’s told me I’m drinking too much (or I told her and she agreed)…, but I really struggle with not drinking. My husband won’t give up his habitual drinking either, though he drinks more moderately than I can… and that makes it especially tough.
I am not sure if this is the right place to post, or the kind of posts people make…
but am not sure where else to say all this.
Welcome Kabloo,
You’re doing great. This is a perfect spot to write and introduce yourself.
Arrhythmia
and a spouse that drinks
I had AFib and still have the second one. A wife that is in active alcoholism. But I’m sober. Because of this App. I did just what you did. I wrote in. Introduced myself. And I got lots of loving non judgmental help from others that know and understand what I’m going through.
Getting sober with a spouse that drinks is possible. Quite a few of us around here have been through that. And are doing it.
Here’s a good thread to check out if you like.
Have a good read around. Join in when you’re comfortable. Ask us questions, as we were all new once and there’s always someone around to help.
And here’s another one.
Welcome Kabloo. As stated above this is a great place to be if you want to get sober and stay sober. Sounds like you have some good reasons to do so. Again read around find a connection and reach out when struggling. We are here to help!
Welcome, Kabloo. Wanting to stay sober and not knowing how, that is something I spent a couple of decades doing. I can tell you that Talking Sober is one of the cornerstones of my daily sobriety, and it’s new folks like you that still give me a blast of hope. You are in a good safe place to stay sober, to help figure out how to grow your sobriety and deal with the ongoing currents of life far more successfully.
Here is a great topic for information on how other people here have gotten and stayed sober. Blessings on your house as you begin your journey.
Welcome @Kabloo !
I hope you’ll give the daily check in thread a try for at least a few days.
I personally find it motivating and reassuring posting some daily thoughts, and reading what other people are up to. It may help avoid drinking knowing you’ve already had some reflection on successes related to sober living that day.
Hi welcome @Kabloo ! It’s lovely to meet you, I’m so glad you found us. This place is awesome and full of lovely people that understand exactly what you are going through. I never, EVER thought that I would ever be free of the weight of my addiction, I too was a drinker. It felt impossible to stop. But I found this place. I come here every day and I’ve just passed 5 years!!! It is possible to break the cycle and live a good life free from the habitual booze cycle. I look forward to seeing you around!!
