How your body recovers after alcohol

Hi all,

I just read an interesting article about how your body recovers after you quit alcohol.

According to the article, alcohol does the following:

  • Increased risk of cancer
  • Strokes
  • Digestive problems
  • Cardiovascular issues
  • Higher risk of depression and anxiety

Wow, those are some pretty serious issues!:astonished:

I read a bit further. The article then started talking about how your body recovers after you’ve stopped drinking alcohol.

First two weeks:
-Your body experiences heavy withdrawal symptoms like fever, sweating, high blood pressure.

After a month:

  • Decrease in liver fat
  • Blood glucose levels dropped
  • Blood cholesterol dropped

Things really start looking up after a month, but true recovery is a sustained sobriety. According to the article, people who’ve stayed sober for longer than a year have a 50% less chance to relapse. That sounds like the biggest and most important milestone to go for.

Alcohol is terrible for us and there are lots of reasons to quit. But we all knew that already, right?

I’m 10 months sober and my body and mind are still recovering, it’s crazy now to think that 10 months ago I was drinking a litre of vodka a day not knowing what was going to happen to me. I’m so grateful to have my life back and to have been given the gift of recovery

When i was in detox, the only people in more pain and agony than the opiate addicts like myself were the alcoholics… It was difficult to watch them be in so much pain, and and unable to do anything to help them.

@Jojo, that’s awesome, your extended sobriety is really encouraging to me.

I’ve heard of all this information before, and it’s one of my current motivations to stop drinking. I’ve noticed a few of these symptoms myself, most notably depression and potentially heart related issues. I’m glad to see there are others in this community that share my concerns.

Thanks for the post,

-James
