I wondered if anyone who has been sober for some time now could give me advice if they noticed an improvement in concentration the longer it was since they used alcohol?
In the past, I enjoyed reading but now I can’t concentrate long enough past two or three pages. I blame this on chronic alcohol binges.
My attention span and memory was awful when I first quit. I’ve definitely noticed my memory has improved over time and my concentration and awareness is much better. I still seem to forget the odd random thing but that might just be me!
For me, I was able to start (barely) reading about 3.5 weeks after dropping the alcohol and drugs. The drugs for me were benzos, which extended the length of all my brain fog and concentration issues. It was probably a few months before I was able to retain what I was reading with any consistency. Even then it was a lot of going back and rereading to figure out what was going on.
My advice, find some games to help with your focus, concentration, and problem solving. In the early days it was sudoku for me, then Mahjong on my phone. They still had an instant gratification aspect but required me to focus and think. Now I’ve moved on to very long, drawn out logistics games on my PC and I love it! I’ve not been reading as much, but that’s how it’s always been. I read endlessly then move on to something else, then come back to reading again.
I’m over 2 and a half years sober. I still struggle A LOT with focus and concentration, but some of that might be ADHD, which is a diagnosis my psychiatrist and I are looking at. Its definitely part of my OCD. But I can safely say that these things are millions of times better!
