Complete of the topics that are usually discussed here, what do people think of the intervention documentaries? Do they help anyone outside the TV show? Seems like often it does not even help the people on the show/.
I have to say some of the shows does show the dark side and this might be a deterrent for others, Thoughts>
I don’t think it sways people either way. From all the addicts and alcoholics I’ve been around its a matter of two things.
One being the fear of starting treatment. In my case I kept putting it off due to the excuses of money, time away from work, withdrawl etc… I will say, the day I went into treatment, i was petrified. The only thing that kept me there was breathing techniques to calm myself and telling myself I was doing a good thing.
The second, about the people who do fail afterwards in the shows, is that there has to be an honest desire to quit. Part of me feels interventions are more of a bullying tactic (in a good way) into forcing someone to make a decision to quit whether or not they have the desire to.
Ultimately, the thing I hate about those shows is that it’s always the people who have hit the worst rock bottom you can imagine, when in all reality, there are tons of addicts/alcoholics out there that haven’t hit the stereotypical rock bottom and look ok on the outside.
I used to watch them when I was drinking. I feel like by watching them I was preparing myself for my own sobriety. I look at an intervention as bringing awareness to a situation. Statistically odds are most people fail. I know its not what you want to here, but it is a fact. That’s why I think it is so important to have a strong and reliable support in recovery. This app is great, but people in my real life are my strongest support. I also think it shows that not one tactic works for everybody. There are several other things I did in preparing myself for my sober journey and here I am now at 42 days.
Its all about what works for you.
