So I am Chris, am 7 years five months sober. Is this it? was the thought that probably got me. I had a weeks holiday, didn’t go anywhere, nobody visited, no pets, no girlfriend, no event.
I had one day left and well I made a night of it. It was a decent time, a perfect day and now that I am sober a reminder that a hangover is something I never want to experience.
Beyond AA, the gym, groups or whatever. How do I not be alone in this technological world? Because I was alright until I wasn’t. There is some activity which exists there has to be a recreational that 30s people do that isn’t drinking or staying at home on a computer. Whatever it is I don’t know it yet. Cravings don’t get me loneliness was the devil.
I know how to stay sober but any advice on what you do to socialise these days? (Beyond the AA and church)
Congratulations on your sober time, very impressive! And Welcome to TS
I started taking dance classes 10 years ago and now I‘m proud that I‘m a quite experienced argentine tango dancer. I love that it’s a social dance. I can connect with people without having to talk with them too much
In general, I think it’s nice to do things together. Maybe you want to join a hiking club, visit art workshops or make your own knife? There’s soooo much to do and learn.
Welcome
There are plenty of opportunities to socialise sober. Hobbies to share mutual interests and have a good time is a vast field to socialise.
You can search for hobbies for inspiration.
Do you have any particular interests? Bookclub, gardening, sports, history, crafting … ?
Also volunteer work is a great thing to spend time and get to know people.
I myself live a very reclusive life because I like it that way. I love to meet friends (mostly we go out eating or for a coffee), go to a classic concert or to the theater every now and then, i do volunteer work in seed saving (great people and always interesting), i like a good chat with my neighbours.
I’m not into church or any programm, so I have no experience in socialising in those settings.
Sending good vibes, you are not alone
If you like, have a read around, there are plenty of interesting threads you can engage and contribute
I think first question is how much socialisation do you need.
And second which kind of.
It needs to fit to us and not to expectations of society.
My hobbies are going to the gym, going for a swim quite often as this is my passion and going to the sauna. Also I started going to readings or shows from time to time. And since few months I am back to going to raves, sober for sure. This I want to keep on doing. Therefor I am checking the news about cultural offers in my area.
This is all no direct socialisation, but fully enough for me. But I am an introvert.
What could you like?
All my experienced with new stuff I did were very good.
I do Lindy hop, there are dance circles all over the world and it’s a massive Social scene that’s not based sound drink.
You don’t need a partner, it’s a social dance, so you dance in pairs but everyone dances with everyone else. It’s easy to learn and all dance circles are really welcoming to new members. Why not do a Google search to find your closest swing dancing / Lindy hop group.
Congrats on 7 years! I am at just over 7 and a half years into my journey. I think you have to know yourself and who you are before you can seek the answer to this question. I can only offer my personal experience to share. So, i am a very introverted person and solitary, im not someone who can really relate to others as well, and i don’t handle being in large crowds all that well. Before I chose to be sober, I would travel all over, go to museums, experience different places and go see landmarks, as this is what i was interested in: seeing how a place came to be. I was into my sobriety and I still did these things, but not as much. I got into hiking big time when I hit my early 30s. I met other hikers on the trails and sometimes we would have a chat. yeah, they were total random strangers, but it’s good to sometimes have a casual conversation. I was more open to this dynamic. Sometimes I would hike with some of them…maybe you might meet someone interesting or have an interesting conversation.
Going back to know who you are, and your personality may influence what you are comfortable with…if you are someone who is introverted and/or solitary, you may be fine going to places by yourself just to try something new. Sometimes just getting out to a place can be refreshing. You may find something you never expected.
Am like you gym and swim was good though my new job is too full on exercise for 10 hours so normally am focusing on rest during time off… might be how I got in the rut XD
Always wanted to hit up a rave but never got round to it came into psychedelics super late bet a place like that would be awesome with the right people.
