When I was in Rehab almost three years ago, there was a group I walked into that opened my eyes. So I wanted to share. It was a group setting and when the counselor came in, he instantly pointed at me. He said “you’re a drinker. You think you can get it under control, and be able to have a drink with a friend right?” Well, yea, I did at the time. The following is what he told me. I wrote it down when I went back to my room, angry that he had singled me out. Then, I re-read it and started to think…
"Rob, you’re from a family of alcoholics, it’s in your blood. When you had your first drink did you realise you had a tolerance higher than others? It’s in your blood. A cucumber has two choices Rob, to stay a cucumber or become a pickle. Once a cucumber becomes a pickle, there’s no going back. You, are a pickle Rob"
I don’t know why, but having it put to me that way made a difference. It made me see from a different light. It doesn’t take a lot of force to make someone feel or look at something differently. It just needs to come across in a non forceful, meaningful way. I pray for all of us on this journey. God Bless.
