Learning how to cook

I get it. I’ve been cooking for what seems like forever but some days I’ll take a day of snacks and be happy. It’s a good path you’re on toward making your own food. I’m happy for you. I had pizza from Domino’s tonight…pick your battles!

I like what I read so far. The different way of looking at it and explaining cooking reminds me of this book I used to have called botany for gardeners. Completely different subject but Kind of similar as far as breaking down things In a more simple way for the average person

I used to cook 4-7 pounds of chicken a lot. Frozen.
I would put all the frozen chicken, I used breasts, in a layer on foil in the pan.
A sprinkle of olive oil, sprinkle Parmesan cheese from the container, paprika, black pepper, garlic powder. Sometimes I would add green olives. Because I did not have a problem with alcohol, ( I didn’t drink it but I could cook with it) I would add some wine but you don’t need to. I would put foil on the top. Put it in about a 420 oven for about an hour or so. Leave it, forget it, come back to delicious chicken that I could use all week in whatever I wanted to use it in. It worked great for me.

Thank you for the suggestion. I’m definitely trying to get in the habit of cooking enough for the week, or at least two or three days out. It just makes things easier.

Feels like everything is connected With this sobriety journey. It’s just about getting up and doing it. Like tonight I was just going to cook some Ramen and I was looking at that bag of brown rice … I just decided to try to cook it… Turned out pretty good. But it seems like it’s trial and error with knowing what seasonings to add maybe?

All kinds of herbs and spices… whatever you love.
Also Mirepoix… I use this as a base for stir frying vegetables a lot. Also for beans some.
I like adding tomatillos.

I think someone else posted but meal planning works great, something I need to get back to,

Another thing I use is an app called my fitness pal. Free version is fine, but it will help you track your meals and remind you to eat

Like you I have a bad habit of skipping meals, so I was using it as a meal tracker goal tracker and making sure I stayed off the super sugars, energy drinks and such,

Things I learned, healthy foods, you’d often need to eat from a trough to get the shitty saturated fats and processed sugars, I always felt comfortable not full, not starving,

A lot of the things I make I learned from the internet and just adjusted to my tastes, I think of recipes as a guideline, this is what was put out now how do I tweak it to my likes?

You can start improving on that little by little. Cut up bacon or sausages, cut carrots or broccoli into little bits, cook in frying pan, add to mac and cheese. Sounds yum. Make soup or salad to go with the chicken patties. Fried rice, or pasta is also easy. There must be cooking 101 youtube channels. Have a go.

I like this thread! I am not a cook. I can bake like a pro, but when it comes to seasonings and meats and stuff I really struggle. I used to make alot of stuff from a box or can. My hubby taught me how to cook eggs well. But I usually overcook meats. Anyway I’ve been trying to eat healthy also. I’ve really liked this recipe for chicpea sandwich filling. I literally buy these huge cans of chicpeas for cheap, rinse them off, mash them up, and add ths other ingredients. U can put whatever u want in it really  its cheap and its high in protein (which was what I was looking for). Thats my only cheap, healthy recipe I have so far.

  • 1 (19 ounce) can chic peas, drained and rinsed
  • 1 stalk celery, chopped
  • ½ onion, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon dried dill weed
  • salt and pepper to taste

Talk nicer about yourself, Mike. Cooking isn’t for everyone. Lol it definitely doesn’t make you dumb or a waste of space. You’re damn good at art and tattoos though.

For real. I have looked at the instructions on these beans like 15 times. I’m so used to it being in a can already prepared… lol It’s all good though you gotta start somewhere.

You should be fine ( and your garbanzos) just following the package directions!

Yeah I think I should be able to figure it out. I was able to cook that brown rice last night and I never did that before it turned out fine. There is so much random things in this house. I’m definitely grateful. This kitchen is full of all kinds of mini cooking projects. I didn’t know this was called chickpeas I’ll probably add something to it also. Thanks for reaching out
