Were flat-earth believers even a real thing until after Facebook showed up? I don’t remember hearing about it until years after Facebook became a norm.

Yep. During WW1, hot air balloons were used for reconnaissance. An extremely bored pilot (I’ll have to look up his name) mused to himself that if the Earth was round, he should be able to watch it rotate.
12 hours later, he’s still looking at the same patch of ground, and decided the Earth must be flat.
Anything within the Earth’s gravity rotates with the Earth, but he didn’t know that. Thanks to Facebook, a lot of people don’t know either.

And it wasn’t proved that the earth was round until the 3rd century
