Night sweats - from Sugar!

I am 16 days sober and one really nice effect was that my night time sweating seemed to have cleared up. I had not realised how much alcohol was the main trigger of this problem. In fact I bought a new comforter last month because I thought it must be the synthetic fibres in the old one. It didn’t work but quitting alcohol did.

So yesterday I had really strong sugar cravings. I don’t get them often but alcohol was suppressing them. I bought a bag of gummy candy and ate half of it before bed and the night sweating came back.

So I googled it and there is evidence that sugar can cause this problem due to blood glucose spiking and then crashing.

If I can’t control the sugar cravings over the next couple of weeks I see that I should at least satisfy them earlier in the day and eat “better” sweets. Sober me baked myself banana chocolate chip bread last week and that is lot more nutritious than gummy candy. It was awesome self care.

Thats interesting, im 2 weeks sober and my night sweats came back in the last 3 nights… The only change ive made is no added sugar drinks in the night rather than sugary ones! Article mentioned low blood sugar as a possible cause for night sweats so I’ll keep an eye on this one

I noticed the same thing! Thank you for the links, I can’t wait to read them!

Your liver is detoxing, and night time is body detox time. Drink hot lemon water in the am with a little sea salt and tons of purified water and it will help to move things along:) xx

Yup your liver is detoxing, everyone is different but I know for me I had about 6 weeks of night sweats when I was in rehab, it was horrible and within the 1st week of stopping drinking the sugar cravings kicked in, I didn’t think I had a sweet tooth but ofcourse alcohol is full of sugar (silly me) I must have consumed so much haribo in my early recovery but the sugar cravings do pass… and at the end of the day it’s better to have some sweets or whatever than pick up a drink

You should give L-Glutamine a try it’s incredible for stopping those sugar and carb cravings, just take it when you feel the craving it only takes about ten minutes to kick in, probably want to take about 500mg a few times a day. At least until you stop getting sugar cravings

I looked into L-Glutamine and it’s only available by prescription. At least here in North Carolina.

I got you @alpine_1975 ! Or well…amazon does anyway.

Thanks for sharing your experiences and tips everyone. Interesting to know that some of you have seen the same effect. I really think there might be something to this. I am going to push any sweets back to 3 hours before bed or more.

I realised I was already taking a little bit of L-Glutamine in my morning breakfast with whey protein @Leigh. I think I will temporarily add a little later in the day.

Edit: @Jojo I agree! Even the gummy candies are way better than turning back to alcohol.
