People in Recovery and Plants! (Part 2)

Omg that’s so cool!

You pretty much have a plant monopoly there. How exciting!!!

This has been so cool to passively watch this slowly unfold from an idea into a reality. How incredible! You should be so very, very proud of yourself!!!

I just started rewatching Frasier!!!

I laughed because I watch the entire series every year.

So, thank you for making my heart smile.

I’d love to hear how your prep is going. My first market was small, but it gave me a big confidence boost. Even a few plants on a table can feel like a win.

If I were a plant, I would want YOU to take care of me.

@TMAC I dare say your beautiful pots and quirky succulents will be a great hit! Do let us know what the vibe is and how it turns out for you. I already told you way back: I foresee commissions! :winking_face_with_tongue:

I have everything I need, I think, except my tent.

My first market being at night (and potential future ones at night), I had to think about lighting. Originally I had found some fold-out gooseneck ones that were 4ft wide and would give great overhead lighting over the whole table. Problem though, where the hell to plug them in? I asked my friend at the plant store and he suggested just getting a 100’ extension cord and figuring it out.

Well that sounded like a whole bunch of fuck-around that I don’t want to deal with, at this market or any other. Hell often times they’re held in a big dirt lot somewhere with nothing to plug into even within 100’.

Thought about some ideas I had and opted to try these rechargeable, cordless LED clamp lamps. They hold a charge long enough for this stuff, or so the description says. They arrived last night and after testing on one table in the yard, I think they’re going to work! I will have 2 of these tables, and have two lamps for each. I may get a 3rd for each but I’ll see how it goes first. These were also half the cost of the plug-in lamps I had been looking at, along with no longer needing an ext cord.

My pop-up tent isn’t here yet and likely won’t be until the days in between the 2 markets. I was hoping to have it for this one, but no big deal. I NEED it for the 2nd one (daytime event in the sun).

I really only have two major concerns left. The first, getting the plants there and back without them getting messed up. My tiny car only has so much flat space and the roads here are brutal. I got these shallow, wide plastic tote boxes to move them in groups, as well as bubblewrap, so hopefully that limits them getting jostled.

The second, I’m not sure if I’m actually going to be OK selling the arrangements! I am a sentimental person and inevitably have become attached to what I’m selling. Knowing I am sending them off, and sending them off to situations where they will possibly die despite by best advice, is kind of sad. While plants don’t have consciousness, I do think they have some level of awareness and my others will sense that some of our greenhouse friends have moved to another school :frowning: It’s going to be hard to ship off these things I’ve made and cared for.

I understand this so much!

And I disagree. The metaphysical study of consciousness is fascinating to me; and, it cannot be empirically proven to reside in the brain. In fact, our hearts store memories!

Plants have been proven to be sentient. After all, we all share a common ancestor. They reproduce, feed, communicate, and defend themselves. They are living things.

So, I understand the sentimentality of not wanting to let go. I feel that way about my art. However, I had to learn which ones I kept and which ones I had to let go of… (so far none.)

Whisper to them a safe word that they can use if they’re being mistreated. Listen for it in the wind, then track them down and go all Repo Man on the owners. :joy:

I thought about this for you too. You are giving your little buds (Ha!) a chance to see the world. You have made something beautiful and are putting it out there so you don’t have all the control but you did your bit. If someone looks mean or sounds like they are a plant murderer, up the price.
If this turns out to be a sticking point you can re-evaluate later. Trying new things is part of the game.
Keep us updated. We’re in your pocket.

Definitely some things I’m staying aware of -

Emotionally, how do I feel about selling these creations I’ve…well, birthed?

I also need to be aware of any stress or burnout around this. This is one of the few things in my life that brings me true, consistent joy. I can’t let it turn into just another set of tasks and deadlines when so much of my life already feels that way. My ADHD brain will shut down any enjoyment of plants if I get to that place, and I don’t want that to happen. It’s too important to my mental health.

Something to keep in mind for myself in regards to all that - I’m fortunate in that I can approach this as leisurely as I want. I don’t HAVE to do x number of events in a month. I can take 3 months off if I want. I can call it quits anytime and go back to being a pure hobbyist, etc.

This first pair of events is just dipping the big toe in. Just because I’ve put money into this, doesn’t mean I’m obligated to see it through if it’s not working for me.

So true. I’m glad you are staying cognizant that the monetization of a hobby doesn’t have to be the endgame. You make the rules here. Keep yourself well.

And show us so many pics!

I admire you mindfulness. I truly wish that you find a balance in how you bring your plants into the world and spread joy, without it becoming emotional or organizational stress for you. You’ll grow and learn from it, and I think that’s wonderful. I’d love to attend one of the markets where you show your plants—they’re simply enchanting. And I’ve already learned so much from you. I always think of you when I see the succulents on my balcony.

Test run for tonight. Need to run out to get one more transport box and more bubble wrap, but that should do it. The cards aren’t lined up with their actual plants, just spaceholders to account for.

You tell yourself that 30+ arrangements is a lot to have on hand, but pretty much everything fits on my 2 tables.

First time setting things up fully. Happy with it. It’ll be even better next week once I have my tent.
