I know I have spent time in the hospital, I’m sure some of you have as well. I was talking to my friend the other day about our stays.
They always send in their nurses, or doctors, or their therapist. They all try to tell you further treatment will help, and how a stay in a psych ward or some other program would be awesome. Which, I agree it is. But, wouldn’t it be easier if the person coming in to talk to you was some one like you? Someone in recovery, someone that can sit down in your room and share stories. Stories of hope, stories of recovery, stories of regaining life. I feel as though if the person sitting with you discussing what should happen next was someone that has been through it people would be more receptive. In my opinion, hospitals should have someone like that, whether it be a volunteer or a hired person. Stop trying to force feed us things they know nothing about. This is our lives, this is real, so why not keep it as real as possible?
Here’s the skinny on my stay in rehab at a hospital.
They don’t tell you that either they were once an addict/alcoholic or that they have had personal dealings with someone close to them who did/does.
It took a week in rehab to find out that 50% of the staff were ex addicts/alcoholics, and the other 50% had very close personal ties with someone who had problems.
I was floored. Didn’t have a clue before I went in.
So ultimately, addiction issues are way more prevalent than we will ever realize, these people have to be professionally neutral, and we are almost being judgmental by thinking these professionals have no clue.
He’ll, I reached out to my primary doctor, turns out his wife is an alcoholic.
Another thing that I also want to bring up is that when people are addicted to something, and there is a problem, then we tend to feel alone in our addiction.
We tell ourselves that no one understands, I’m hiding it well from other people, etc…
When in all reality, it’s far from the truth.
Makes sense what you all are saying. I guess I feel attacked seeing someone in a Dr coat or a nurse. However, since posting this and recieving feedback, I have spoken to my therapist, and doctor, and you guys are right, there is people in that field that completely understand. Thank you guys for the feedback. Live and learn, one day at a time. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas
