Heritage of my grandmother from a country that no longer exists  ex GDR. And it’s rare that the tiny salt thing is still inside.

You are correct!
It’s a mechanical pencil.
The little window in it you rotate around to select the type of lead you are using - this way you can have multiple of the same pencil and keep different hardness leads inside and keep track of which is which.

Indeed it was the hardness indicator that gave it away for me. Somehow recognised the brand too. Mine’s probably the simplest they make, yours is at the other end of the spectrum.

A good pencil will last a lifetime.
This one was about $30 USD. Totally worth it.
I generally import my stationery as Australia does not have a great market for the kind of pens and pencils I prefer to use. I like very fine tip Japanese gel pens of 0.3mm to 0.38mm max. I also love brown, grey, or blue-black ink.
My go-to store is Jet Pens

My other favourite pencil is the Pentel Kerry
Absolute stunner

I like those but I have no real use for them. And a bad conscience. As a teen me and my mate shoplifted countless rotring and steadler ink pens and sold them at school, causing a short lived hype. To help pay for our hash and weed habits.

Might get a better vulpotlood similar to yours though. Buying it this time. And leaving out the explanations here again.

I have learnt something new!

That’s awesome. I’d go every game if I lived slightly closer than Manchester!! I have family close by, so we’ve been to a few games, and I have all the American sports channels so I try to keep up. This is me from a few years ago. Generic English guy at a baseball game. Probably stood out like a sore thumb. I look more like a hippie these days! Haha.
