We were in California @Dazercat! We were driving along the PCH and stopped to take pictures. We were somewhere between San Francisco and Monterey.

We have been in drought for a couple months now and on hosepipe bans country wide. The crops have failed and there’s so many problems. Fish are just this week starting to wash up and float, dying in ponds and lakes because the natural oxygen has run out (heatwaves and no rain). Some companies are running emergency aerators into bodies of water to save the fish… It’s actually really sad.
When we were walking thru the field of wheat yesterday it was barren and it’s too early for this. There’s rosehips and sloe and elder berries that are ripe but immature fruits. Usually you pick these after the first hoar frost to take advantage of the ice crystals breaking the cells in the fruit and sweetening the product. Yes you can do this in a freezer, but it’s not nature’s way, nor traditional. The bramble fruit is all out but unripe and sun burnt. So when our lovely Scandinavian migrants come there will be little berries for them left. I mean, I’m oversimplifying as I guess there’s some mitigation built into bird behaviour.
But we saw no harvest mice, therefore no birds of prey… Only spotted little shrews in the woodland. It’s very sad, honestly.

I’m so sorry. It is very sad. I hate to see and read about it. Being from the parched southwest out here, I’m always amazed at how green you guys always have been no matter when I’ve visited. Shocking. At least you’re not on fire. Yet

Not anywhere near the Reno sized fire , but we have been having like 60+ wildfires per day since July. It’s taken some vital grasslands and habitats. Finally rain today… After 3 months.

A booby bird rested here overnight a couple of trips ago. I had never seen one before. It was awesome!

It’s not really nature anymore, but I realized since I’ve been gone our baseball field has had a makeover out here in the desert. It’s fake grass lol but it looks pretty in photos. Not quite sure how I feel about it yet, I will miss cutting the grass on weekends but on the bright side it’s easy to take care of.
