Raised ALT

Hey, just wondered if anyone has had raised ALT the doctor told me mine was at 167 so its super freaked me out. This will be day one for me and I am feeling pretty rotten. They said all my other tests were normal but i have felt a bit off for a few months.

Yeah mine was high whilst drinking, i had my bloods redone at 3 months sober and it was back within normal levels, one of the many things its worth staying sober for

Do you know what your reading was at all?

Hi Littleshanan, welcome to talking Sober and welcome to your sobriety! As to your question, the most important thing is, what did your doctor say about your ALT level? This is stuff to get advice on from medical professionals, not directly from a bunch of strangers on the internet. We’re good at helping each other get sober and stay that way, by offering help, support, advice. We’re not doctors who know you. Anyway, I know a little bit about it, 167 is elevated but it’s not incredibly high. Again, ask your doctor what you should do about it. Quitting drinking might very well do the trick. Wishing you all success.

@Littleshanan Welcome to Talking Sober, Your ALT is higher than range but no need to worry about it, it will back to normal if you stop drinking and follow doctor instructions

It was 95 at its highest, 3 months after i got sober it was 35, 3 months after that still sober it was 18, its an enzyme that the liver produces more of when its under stress/ inflammed etc i was told so doesnt necessarily mean its damaged but obviously its better if its in the normal range, im not a doctor though so id advise a good chat with yours for some professional advice

Thanks for the messages , guess its just played in my health anxiety. Doctor wants to see what they are like in two weeks and then take it from there. Just a bit concerned of the damage i have done

Best thing you can do for yourself right now is treat yourself with kindness and stay sober, look toward all the things that bring you comfort and try to do them as much as possible, its ok to do that, then you can see how things are in a couple of weeks, the good thing is youve consulted a professional

Use it as a wake up call. We CAN hurt ourselves with drinking. Badly.

Mine was over 200, and fwiw that’s not particularly high for a committed alcoholic.

Now it’s normal and no long term damage. I’m lucky, but you could be too if you stay sober.
