Reasons to Drink or Abstain

I made two lists in an attempt to help me see why not drinking is the better option. What are your lists?

Reasons not to drink:

  • So I don’t do stupid things
  • To have a better relationship with my wife
  • To honor God
  • To be a better dad
  • To lose weight
  • To have better skin
  • To live in peace
  • Improve mental health
  • Have more energy
  • No more hangovers
  • Sleep so much better
  • No more guilty feelings
  • Spend more time with Jesus

Reasons to drink:

  • To feel good for a little while
  • Take a break from painful feelings/memories

I could add a few to the list of reasons not to drink

  • To keep my job

  • To not become suicidal

  • I don’t blow money on booze and hotel rooms (I’d sequester myself away in shitty hotels for days on end, so I could drink like I wanted to and hide from the world)

That’s a great list and it’s always a really powerful tool to write stuff like that down :+1:

Ya know, that was on my list of reasons to drink…looking back…it never made me feel good. It was all a joke I told myself.

@Thirdmonkey man that’s so insightful. Part of why I decided to go all-in for sobriety is because all the fun has been taken out of drinking. It’s ruined. It stopped feeling good. So, I probably could have left that off the list, but I also know it’s a lie that I will hear when I’m craving it.

That realization is something that really helped me stay sober.

Pure fear to die. Spiralling downwards into suicidal thoughts. Pure fear.
