The Polynomial
This one is not automotive. It is mathematical.
For all the kids out there who are going to major in math, this is for you.
Many of the little children that listen to Car Talk are studying algebra. So I thought I would ask them to simplify the following polynomial.
(x + a) X (x - b) X (x + c) … All the way to (x - z). So you do that, from a to z, alternating the plus and minus function.
If you take all of those, we are looking for the product of those terms

Simple x
2 + A) X (2 - b) X (2 + c) Comes out to π= 2Mc²
Simpler than that, it is!
hint - there are 26 letters in the alphabet.
Answer is zero
(x + a) X (x - b) X (x + c) …(x-x)X(x+y)X(x-z)
The x-x=0 so therefore everything that is multiplied by this is zero

The operation on the even numbered letters of the alphabet is subtraction, x is the 24th letter of the alphabet, so the multiplicand (x-x) will appear.
