Sex addict new to recovery

Hi everyone, I’m seeking help for my sexual addiction. I don’t act out with people anymore, but I struggle to avoid porn & masturbation. I’m preoccupied with thoughts & urges that interfere with my life & relationships. I just want to be normal.

You’re not alone, there’s a good number of us here in recovery from sex / porn / masturbation. It takes persistence but you can do it.

Do you have a program that you follow, or a recovery support group you attend?

Not yet. I went to an SLAA meeting years ago & liked it, but with COVID I wouldn’t be able to do that.

That may not necessarily be true - many sex addiction recovery programs have some online options - it can’t hurt to take a look & see. Neal made a post of some of them here:

How have things been with you through the pandemic? How have you been managing?

I’m headed to bed but will check in tomorrow. Take care & have a safe night :innocent:

Thank you so much!
Things have been OK. I am blessed to still have my job- I can work from home.
I have a 16-year-old son who is always here, doing online school. He’s a really good kid, so we have not had many problems during the pandemic. And neither of us have been sick, so that’s good.
How about you?

@GoodFight3 welcome!
I attend SLAA and my group has started back with both in person and zoom meetings. While in person meetings may not be an option where you are the virtual are nearly as good.

I’ve been good. Also blessed to still have my job, and while there is still some site visits - wearing masks & disinfecting, to be safe - the majority of my work can be done virtually.

Glad to hear you’re doing well. It’s important to stay connected at this time. Is your son adjusting to the virtual learning in school? Or are they back in person?

He’s 100% virtual. Struggling with his grades a bit unfortunately.

It’s been a hard year. Virtual learning is a cool piece of technology but the interaction & motivation changes so much - the presence of being “in” school is different.

What about you? Being home with him - how do you manage?

It’s been good because he is a really well-behaved kid. The only adjustment has been trying to make sure I get enough work done. My job has us put in a regular 8-hour work day even remotely. They monitor us to make sure we are actually online doing stuff, so I can’t really stop & do anything that takes longer than a few minutes. They do send e-mail updates to parents to let us know how our kids are doing. And since he is older, he can pretty much handle it himself- I wake him up in the morning & he logs in & attends all of his classes on time. He was asking me to make sandwiches in the beginning, but now he is doing that himself. LOL :joy:

Mmmmm fresh sandwiches… I love a good homemade club sandwich. And saving $$$ not eating outside doesn’t hurt either! :joy:
