Thanks!
Iāve decided to take up cycling as a sober activityā¦ I havent ridden a bicycle in yearsā¦ Iām heading to the local bike shop in about an hourā¦ any pointers? Advice?
Good idea Jose. A local bike shop is a good start, hope thereās somebody working there with some knowledge of bikes and humans who is not looking to make a quick buck. Also think about what kind of riding youād like to do. Urban, road racing, gravel, all terrain tracks? A bit of all? Whatās your budget? You can start off cheaply, maybe even get a second hand one, might be a good idea to find out you really like it. Prices vary wildly from a couple of hundreds to over 10,000 for a professional bike.
Anyway, a good guy or girl working in a good shop is an excellent starting point. Heā/she will help you get the right size and fit which is very important to prevent you from having trouble with your back or knees. And, as is with getting sober or anything really, knowledge is power! Inform yourself. Google around a bit. Success and have fun!
Thanks for the inputā¦ the guy did seem like he was trying to make a buckā¦ most of his tracks were empty so I guess I get itā¦ due to covid heās definitely hurting for business. He had just received a shipment of 5 cannondale Trail 8āsā¦ charging $500 which is right up my financial alleyā¦ BUTā¦ i wasnt impressed with the bike as it is more of a mountain bike and i want a bike more suited for commuting to and from work here in NYCā¦ guess Iāll keep sesrchingā¦ Iām am disappointed as I really wanted to have this done already and its triggering my frustration and impatience which is a quick route to a drinkā¦ BUT Iām not gonna toss away my recovery over itā¦ āaccept the things I cannot changeā¦ā
Start with training wheels my friend. They help in the beginning. lol
Seriously @Jose_NYC congratulations on your 5th day of sobriety. Youāre doing it Jose keep up the good work. Stay focused and determined in your resolve. Proud of you and thank you for your service.
Bowling. My son loves it. Not really my thing but ā¦ the years go by too quick. He turned 8 today. Hope he doesnāt remember my bad years too much.
Gotta wait outside for my haircut, only two in the shop at a time! Iām grateful the barber is open and itās a fine day for hanging out out of doors!
Iāve been a cyclist for a few years now and the biggest lesson Iāve learned is making sure you find a bike that fits. Donāt settle for something thatās too big or small.
Also, try to decide if you want do leisurely rides, ride to achieve fitness goals, or want something that is fast and performant. These riding styles can influence the style of bike that is ideal for you.
Iāve also heard bike shops are very low on supply due to COVID season so you may need to look high and low for something that meets your needs.
Soaking up that sun itās not sand on my toes but Iāll take what I can get on this sober Wednesday
Cool kicks!
I keep suggesting wait till covid is goneā¦ by then people will be wanting to sell their bikes. Even campers too if your looking. People dont realize what you have to do to take care of things
way to take the good out of the day!
What a great thread!
