Driving is actually incredibly therapeutic for me.

I would have thought being on a rig all day would make you hate it,

Understandable. There must be something broken in a person who voluntarily chooses to live in the shadow of DC. Iā€™ve lived here 23 years, longer than Iā€™ve lived anywhere else, including my native Boston. Doesnā€™t matter which ā€œsideā€ is currently in charge. The machine keeps turning. I look at my desire and steps being taken to leave this place as a sure sign that I am getting better at getting better.

My cousin was/is a Captain in the Army, lived in DC for a few years about 5 or 6 yrs ago. Said he couldnā€™t stand it there, just because it was all politics, allllll the time. Said it was exhausting.

I imagine he liked it better than Iraq, though!

At least in Iraq it was easier to tell the good from bad.

I have tried to explain this to family and friends whoā€™ve never lived here. There are no ā€œlocalā€ politics in this area. Sure, we have local and state elections, but every election is heavily influenced by national politics. This is why even after being asked to run for local office, I have declined. Iā€™ve actually worked on local campaigns where I live. Iā€™ve knocked on doors and had conversations with the average voter. All they want to do is vent about what the ā€œother sideā€ is doing in DC. They donā€™t want to talk about property tax rates, the state of our public schools, zoning, potholes or streetlights. Canā€™t really blame them, considering the constant stream of media and soundbites emanating from that city down the road. If thatā€™s all you read, see, and hear, thatā€™s all you think about.

For sure,

I think alot of people move here for the jobs or to get on the hill, some get married start families and get stuck, you still have some military who get stationed here.

You are 1000% correct on the political views. I dont see that changing, I said it a million times people ignore local politics and just check the box for the one who is in their party. But then I hear about how someone in DC, I bet 99% of them started in your own back yard.
