5 years ago, there was a “social issue” that was all over facebook. I have my position, and respect that others may hold a different position. I’m not one to debate over something like facebook, as I see it pointless. If you are commenting on news stories or declaring your position, there is almost zero chance that you are undecided, or open to changing your view. So some event happened related to the issue, and my sister, as well as several cousins are changing their profile pictures and declaring their full support for one side of the argument. I simply pointed out how our mutual grandparents held a different view, and the next minute my facebook is blowing up. Now, I am no slouch in an intellectual discussion, and am perfectly capable of debating both sides of the argument. This wasn’t what happened. It was like Enter The Dragon.
I am thinking, “we are family, and we can’t disagree without being disagreeable?” I thought about this for a couple days, and then just deleted my account. Gone. Done.
About a month later, my sister texts me saying she can’t find me on facebook. I replied, “that’s because I deleted my account”. She asks “why?” and I say, “just got tired of all the folks who won’t tolerate someone else’s point of view.” She says “Yeah, I feel the same way sometimes, but you should have one so you can stay in touch with your family.”
Oh the irony of her statement gave me an ocular migraine. Had to reach for the duct-tape to keep my head from exploding.
