Sober Time 4.3.05 - Journal tones and more

Hello Talking Sober community,

I’ve been working on an update for Sober Time. It includes some significant improvements to the journaling experience, but also improves settings and backups. It’s currently being rolled out globally, so everyone should have access to it in the next few days. Details below!

Journal Tones
This is the primary new feature. It’s subtle, but it can make a big difference. Everyone’s on a different journey. Journal Tones, as the name implies, lets you change the tone of the guided journal prompts. The default is “Balanced”, which is what you already have, and now “Gentle” and “Tough Love” have been added too. The questions stay mostly the same, but there are slight variations that make all the difference.

You can change your Tone at any time from the Journal’s settings or from a convenient dropdown above your prompt while filling in a journal entry. Changing your tone won’t affect any of your previous entries, the prompts will just change throughout the app. Your notifications will also show the prompt in the new tone. You can still disable journal prompts from the journal’s settings, which would also negate this feature.

Restart Prompts
This is a feature that some people have been asking me for. Put simply, it lets you restart your journal prompts. The app will set today as the very first day in the guided journaling journey and you’ll see the first prompt of the first chapter again. You can use this if you just want to redo them, if you want to start over after a long break. You can also restart it and set it to a different tone for a new experience. You can find the button in the Journal’s Settings.

Two more chapters
There are two new chapters added to the Guided Journal with a total of 14 new prompts. Have a look at the journal’s Chapter page for more detail.

Draft system replaced with auto-save
The draft system would save your work as a temporary entry and then auto-fill an entry the next time you worked on one. It was confusing and unintuitive. Instead, Sober Time will now just save your entry automatically every few seconds or when you leave the app or page to ensure you never lose anything while typing. In 99% of the cases this is probably what you’re looking for, and if you really didn’t want to save an entry you can always go and delete it.

No more popups when navigating to the journal and back
For the free users: You won’t see popup ads when opening or closing the journal anymore. These were too disruptive and took away from the journaling experience. To compensate, some entries may have a banner ad near the bottom if there’s empty space.

Some bug fixes and improvements

  • Fixed a bug where the explanation popup would show every time you go to the journal’s chapters page. It was supposed to only show the one time.
  • Fixed a bug where your currency wouldn’t save if you changed it in the app’s settings
  • Fixed a bug where the app could show the incorrect motivational message if you opened it up from the notification (under some specific circuimstances)
  • Improved Cloud Sync’s backup and restore of app settings

Sober Time’s design philosophy has always been that of unique and individual customization. I hope these new features help you on your journey.

As always, reach out to me if you have any questions or issues.

Thanks for reading
Robin

I really appreciate you updating the app. I really appreciate having the auto save for journal entry because I use it all the time. My one big problem is that I don’t want a prompt. I just wanna go into the app and label it whatever day I’m on with the time, and start typing.

With this new layout of journaling, I cannot turn off the guided prompt. Even when mine says, it’s disabled. Because of that, I cannot jump down to start a new paragraph. It’s just a checkmark now. When I do my journaling, I write a lot of paragraphs. I don’t want it to be all one huge paragraph.

How do I change that?

I need the button that is under the backspace. I don’t like the checkmark where that button used to be. How do I get rid of that?

@BWASH16 I replied in the other topic you created, but both of these are getting fixed in the new update that I submitted on Monday. Just waiting for Apple to review and approve.
