Stories of a Finn

Hello, I’m Finn. I chose my nickname, because I’m Finnish, a Finn. I’m from Lapland, where people come to see Santa Claus, reindeer, snow and northern lights, if I may put it like a fairy tale. Tourism is in fact important part of our economic structure. Despite winter wonderland-reputation we have our problems and life can be brutal here like all over our planet.

A member of this forum recommended that I create my own thread for journaling. Nature of my journaling will propably be ”stream of consiousness” and historically unlinear, while still trying to maintain a thread running through it or some kind of core. Occasionaly I journal deep thoughts or short aforisms to my Facebook friends, but maybe TS would be another, different kind of channel creating different kind of thoughts because of anonimity, world wide members and our shared problem: addictions.

Hi Finn, here’s another Finn :waving_hand:t2: I used to live in the Santa Clause capital for a number of years before relocating to Eastern Finland. How wonderful that you created a thread of your own. Whatever direction you decide to take it, I hope it serves you well. Mine doesn’t get much traffic but it’s not about that - I’m writing for me.

Hello, I’m happily suprised to meet you!:waving_hand: I’ve also shortly studied and worked in the city of Santa Claus. I appriciate your attitude on journaling. I also think that it helps organizing my mind or something like that. I’m going to follow your thread. Thank you for support:blush:

Day 5 going strong

My rehab facility has been confirmed today. I’m starting on Friday. This is my first rehab. It’s 4 weeks. I’m really looking forward to it. Service manager on the phone felt really nice and proffesional. Facility is 350 km away from here and in the same city I’m planning to move. Maybe I’ve already mentioned that the city has several AA groups, so it’s possible to have meeting every day, some days twice a day. Here in periferia we have meetings two times a week. Today I realised that city that big I might be able to have a sponsor in some group. We don’t have sponsor system here.

Week ago I was deeply suicidal, shaking from fear with the idea that I must do it that week but frightened as hell. I was sober and even told my dad that prepare that I won’t live long. This sounds crazy and contains a trigger warning but I took booze and became active. I made reindeer pie and started to plan things. Suicidal thoughts went away. Well I drank couple days heavily. I made some weird posts in facebook. I guess my sister had read them and in the morning I read a long message from her that I need to stop drinking in spite it gives short relief but eventually it will take everything from me. My home, which is my parents home had already changed from warm ”grand ma’s place” to a place she couldn’t bring her children like it used once to be. She said that I needed detox and she would arrange it. I agreed.

On the same day, Thursday, I still drank what i had left. I needed more. I couldn’t drive and even if I had called taxi I knew they wouldn’t sell to me because my shakes were so bad and my legs cramping. My dad was sober, going somewhere by car. I asked him if he is going to the village. He said he’s going to neighbour. I said he had to get me six pack of 8% beer or else I’m going to die. I still remember the look in his face, he was scared.

He did bring those beers. I drank them and felt more normal. Pain, shakes, cramps were better. Soon he drove me to health center. I met nurse and doctor. I had 2 promilles. Paid taxi drove me to detox to another town. He was familiar driver and we spoke all sorts of things. He wouldn’t had believed that I had 2 promilles if I hadn’t said that because I acted sober. I said I guess I have tolerance from three days of drinking.

We arrived to the health center and I thought I had never been in the building. Some time after that I remembered I was born there 1987. They gave me food and Valium. I slept the night decently. Next day I was able to go to the market. Food portions were quite small so I went to the market every day to buy snacks and red bull. Last day I bought red bull with my last money. I could have had change to buy beer every day but I didn’t think about that.

Four days I had good appetite. I ate and ate, ate during the nights also. I ate and rested and thinked thinked and thinked. I had realised week or two earlier that I have no future in the periferia. I had already had plans of moving. In the hospital my plans continued, but this time to another city where I had originally planned to move. I was full of plans and willing to live, no signs of suicidal thoughts. Most of the time I looked into the city from my phone. Made plusses and minuses. Checked appartments. Checked AA groups. Checked hobbies. Checked everything. Called a lot and texted a good friend of mine who lives there. I left on Monday in a good mood. Nurses wished me well.

Now on Tuesday I feel quite fine and went to play badminton with a friend. We spoke a lot.

This was supposed to be a usual check-in on the forum, but grew into a story. Maybe I make own thread of this. To also to remind myself.

I felt nostaltic at the hospital where I was born 1987 and also fatalistic that I kind of was born there again in 2026. But I’m always an addict and I realise that I need to work on my self a lot. Next step is rehab starting on Friday.

Have a nice day and stay sober and safe!

Checking in day 7

Drove 350 km from home to the city where rehab is supposed to begin to begin tomorrow. Staying over night with friend family, couple who are both my old school mates with two small kids. Hectic here ofc but we have had dinner and supper and lots of talk and laugh. Love and support. Blessed for good friends. Now just trying to relax before sleep.

At rehab!

Arrived 10 am, my friend drove me to city. Had time to have a cup of tea and a sandwhich at the mall before signing in. Shortly: interview in my own room, checking my gear, signing couple of contracts, introducing the building, lunch, guided walk/buying groceries with tutor/instructor and the others. Everybody were in a good and stable mood.

(14.00 medicines)
14.15 coffee
16.00 Dinner
17.15 Evening group
19.30 supper
20.00 medicines
23.00 silence in the building
(19-20 sauna)

Well I feel I don’t need to worry much at the moment. Situation at home was so anxious that I feel better here, now. I also realise that I have to work. For sobriety and life. Better not to worry what’s after signing out.

Be sober and safe

I’m glad to hear you chose detox and rehab instead of addiction. Suicidal ideation is brutal, I know that from firsthand. I hope you are able to bring that up and get some help to process it. It’s brutal on your family too. I’m sure they don’t take such words lightly. It’s good that you are there, safe and optimistic. Enjoy the sauna!

Thank you for support. Thanks God I have no suicidal thoughts anymore. Bad thing about them ”normal” people don’t understand the desperation. Usual comment can be: ”Ok, that’s bad. Don’t do it”. Or just silence. I’m in the opposite now, I’m very optimistic and full of plans but also tired. I wish you well.

Day 10. Rehab is awesome. I do little gym everyday. Most active day so far. Went swimming. It was also very nice, I’ve always liked swimming. Another reason to move to city. Went to flea market with two other customers. Went to market and bought tarot-cards to kill some time. Another customer bought cards also. I had yesterday still benzos in my pee from detox so I can’t go outside without supervisor. Evening group soon. Theme of the week is self-image. Maybe the best day of the year and I feel healthy.

Have a nice day!

Day 12

Rehab continues. This is a long update and I understand if you don’t bother to read it

I woke up at around 12:05 a.m., feeling surprisingly well-rested despite after an active day.

I had been dreaming that I arrived at an AA meeting. The meeting began, but for some reason I started doing the dishes. Suddenly, the television was on, and the meeting carried on while I stood there washing dishes and everyone else sat in the meeting room.

Eventually, I became angry and said, “I didn’t come here to watch television.”

An older AA member suddenly stood up, looking alarmed and said, “No, no, don’t leave. Otherwise you’ll start drinking again.”

I kept washing the dishes until the meeting was over. I never spoke.

This dream felt the most interesting dream this year. I asked AI to analyze the dream and it suggested an Jungian analyse (Carl Jung, swizz psychiatrist). My referate from the analyse:

From a Jungian perspective, your dream can be seen above all as a scene of individuation — the encounter between an old self and an emerging new self.

1. The AA meeting — community and a new direction

2. Washing the dishes — encountering the shadow through ordinary work

The other people are sitting and talking. You are doing physical, ordinary work.

Washing dishes can symbolize something very concrete psychologically: cleansing what is old.

The old life cannot be left behind simply by talking about it — it also has to be cleaned up in concrete, practical ways.

3. The television — passivity and a life merely observed

Television provides ready-made content to watch. You do not have to participate; you can simply receive.

4. Anger — healthy aggression

It can be a force that protects psychological boundaries.

“This is not what I need.”

5. The older AA member — the Wise Old Man

He may represent an older and wiser part of your own psyche, something within you that knows something your conscious mind does not yet fully understand.

His message could be:

“Do not break your connection with this process.”

6. But you do not completely obey him

You remain part of the community, but you participate in your own way.

7. Your silence — perhaps it is not yet time for words

Something is happening, but you may not yet be ready — or willing — to turn it into words for other people.

Instead, you act.

8. You stay until the meeting ends

the meeting ends, and you are still there.

If the dream could be reduced to one Jungian sentence

“Do not leave the connection, but do not abandon your own way of walking this path either.”

And at an even deeper level:

The television represents passive existence. The dishwashing represents cleansing through action. The older AA member represents inner wisdom. The meeting represents new connection. And you are in the middle of all of these, building a new relationship with yourself.

What strikes me most is that your dream does not end with you leaving.

It ends with you staying.

——— Dreams are just dreams but this one was so special and I wanted to show what AI can do. Ofc you need to use AI with critic and this was partly entertainment. Thanks if you bothered to read this
