In doing some reading on addictions, I’ve come across a distinguish in them- substance addictions and behavioral addictions. We all know the usual Substance addictions because they’re the ones that are popular and discussed in society. One may have a relative or friend that may have a Substance abuse problem and recovery is freely talked about. However, the behavioral addictions are viewed very differently because most of society doesn’t really understand them. PMO, gaming, eating disorders, gambling, self-harm, etc. are seen as something that can just be stopped like one would stop staying up so late or not wearing your seat belt. Just “stop” the behavior. The struggle, I’m sure, is very challenging to overcome these addictions. I have discussed this on Zoom that the addiction that statistically leads to suicide, more than any other, is gambling. It blew me away that a behavioral addiction can be more deadly than a Substance addiction. It’s very very important for both addictions to be addressed. Although gambling is the deadliest with suicide, it is the most recoverable after proper treatment.
