I’m going with 3 years for EARLY sobriety, just because I once heard that when people get past that point, there’s a better chance of it sticking for the long haul. But what do I know, especially with some of the things I’ve read on this site… :woman_shrugging:t3:

At any rate, I’d say 1 year is a lower bound for many purposes. Anecdotally, lots of change tends to occur throughout many people’s first year. But nothing magic happens at one year, and at that point many have not yet reached their equilibrium.

Unless something magic happens, I definitely won’t get there in a month. So for me 1 year is definitely still early.

In my own recovery I refer to those first few months as “super early recovery,” mostly because it was the day to day, small stuff.

I’m going with 5 years. I don’t need the pressure of a shorter time! It helps with my mental health.

This may be different for various types of addictions. I said 6 months, which definitely felt like a huge change to me in the past. It was maintenance afterwards for me. Nevermind the fact that I got complacent and relapsed a few months later. I think that it may also be different for each person within each addiction as well. Some people have stronger chains binding them.

It’s what one of my rehab counselors used. She had statistics and shit. So I just go with that because what do I know lol. I would also consider the first 5 years as well. I feel like anything before 2 years is too soon because the majority of relapses occur in the first 2 years. My counselor said that people who stay clean for 2 years have a 80-90% chance of staying sober. No I cannot verify those facts, but she was pretty well read on the topic of addiction and recovery.
