Ugh! ANOTHER emergency vet visit for a urinary blockage. He is being hospitalized overnight and I have to pick him up and bring him to my regular vet in the morning. I need to suck it up and put him on prescription food I think. I’ve heard the whole prescription food is a scam. Any thoughts and/or experience?
Oh no! I’m so sorry!
If you can get your cat to eat it, it could help. Food is important. You can try different types that are formulated similarly too. The cost is rediculous though.
I’ve never had amazing luck getting my cats to eat prescription food long term. I do think the k/d pate was helpful for Zelda while she would eat it. I mix her food with a bit of water and heat it slightly to make it more interesting.
Not sure if that helps. Couldn’t hurt to try it out. You can make your own decision from what you see.
I’m so sorry about your cat.
Prescription pet food is not a scam. The shit they sell in the stores is crap. We always trust our vets and feed our pets what they recommend and when they recommend a prescription diet we do it. Especially for urinary blockages or cystitis. It cleared our guys up a couple of decades ago. Different batch of cats We always order from Chewys. They contact our vet. Then they ship it. So easy. Been doing it for years.
I hope you’re little guy feels better soon.
Aw im sorry to hear that I hope your cat is okay and the new food works for you all
So I got my cat the flopping fish toy… she loves it!
Have a huge cat stand coming soon too… excited to put it together for her… way more and taller than the old one.
Thanks, Eric. I thought he had stress when he had his last episode, so I didn’t change his food. I will this time.
I have 2 kitties. He likes wet food better than dry, so I hope the dietary change isn’t too much of a problem. His sister loves kibble! But could stand to lose a few pounds, so this might work out well! Thanks for your thoughtful words.
I was talking to the vet some weeks ago about the food I gave the kittens as well.
I turned my mind around a bit. The food thing, vet food is not good, feels for me a bit like: no-one trusts science or studied people anymore as I googled it. So when we were talking he was getting a bit angry, not about me in particular but this development then I was a bit defensive and said: but they like it. He said: yeah, people like and eat Mcdonald food all the time… Still not good for them.
I give my pets, I thought, decent quality food. I buy it at Petco, not the grocery store. It is grain-free. I dunno…but I have to do something new. I am $1,500 into this and I’m not finished. He is going to be hospitalized another few days.
Cats can’t digest grains or anything plant-based. Their digestive system just isn’t made for it. Well I guess you know that. They need animals to feed on. Luna had a bit of a problem with peeing outside the box for a long time. I did the urinary tract food for a while and it worked fine, until she didn’t want to chew the special dry food no more. Switched to the wet variant which is terribly expensive. Tried some different stuff since and now she and I are perfectly happy with an organic wet food from my local grocery that’s not cheap but a lot cheaper and obviously has the right amount of minerals to keep her kidneys and urinary tracts healthy and running.
Poor kitty. I feel with you, my red persian suffered the same. Special Vet food wet and dry helped a lot. She was a poorly drinker, so I added water to every wet meal and restricted dry food to a hand full daily. I also tried a drinking fountain to increase her water intake, that worked well - and was fun for everyone
Hope your kitty recovers soon
All the best
Thank you so much! I was thinking of a fountain but might wait. Too many changes at once! Based on the litter box, I think both kitties are drinking. It is hard when there is two. Plus two dogs. That leads to another issue… keeping the kitties out of the dog food. Ugh!
This time I share a picture from another cat then mine. This is a pub cat, he lives in Leeuwarden and sleeps at the terras. I had the honor to sit beside him. He is so relaxed! This pub is at a very crowded point in the shopping centre and loads of people make pictures from him ore wants to cuddle with him.
I had two too, but it was easy to monitor and distinguish the litter box content: he had 7 kg, she 3. that manifests in intake and on the other end of the cats
