I’ve been looking for a topic like this on the forum and didn’t find it, lmk if there’s any.
Is there any writers on here? Not necessarily professional, but who has a writing practice in his life.
I do work on different project (PhD, articles, journaling, dreams, etc.) and I’m curious about what people on here are working on. For me, writing is a big part of my sobriety. I take a lot more time for it and it helps me a lot. I’m curious about the writing practice of other sober ppl, how it is incorporated in the days (morning routine, just on week end, when you feel like it…), what are we working on or trying to do or achieve, which medium (paper & pen, computer, journals…) what’s the system or methodology you guys use, etc…
I’m going to work now so I don’t really have time to contribute but I’ll do it later, just wanted to share and ask you for now. Hope you have a great day !
Daily gratitude list and any notable things from the day every night
Write letters
The third is because I like to write, but do not have the discipline to go back and craft, edit, revise, etc. So I write letters, which gets things off my chest and then out the door. I mostly write on an old Royal typewriter. I am currently a little behind on my correspondence because my early sobriety has been super intense emotionally and all consuming, so it’s been hard to feel able to write openly and honestly about it, except to people who have been there and get it. But maybe I’m starting to break through that. Today I have zero plans, so maybe I will set a goal to catch up and reply to the stack of letters/cards on my table.
I actually write in my spare time. Its mostly for fun, but I do want to get published someday haha
I like writing Fantasy Adventure books, so series like Fablehaven, Pillage, and The Maze Runner are things I am quite into haha! I hope to make something equally as good one day.
I used to be a journalist. This profession hugely contributed to my heavy drinking over the past decade or so. Now I do content strategy for brands. Still highly creative, but in a different way. The satisfaction I get from coming up with creative campaigns for my clients mostly keeps me content and away from alcohol.
(I said “mostly” because I did mess up at the office Christmas party last week. Oops.)
I have hard time with discipline when it comes to pursuing a project that has no obligation nor deadline to it. When it’s academic, I can work on a big long term project, but when it comes to my personal writings, my ideas switches often. Writing letters seems like a good way to reach out in a “shorter” way than writing, let’s say, a book or something like that. I’m going to think about that. Are you always sending them to people or you’re not always writing letters to people? (I ask because I heard about the potential benefits of writing letters to people that are not in your life anymore -and not necessarily sending them- or even writing letters to “things” -like in the movie Collateral Beauty, where the guy send letters to Love, to Time and to Death.)
Even if you say you don’t have the discipline to work on a bigger project (editing, etc.), I think having these 3 writing practices requires a certain discipline. Writing daily gratitude list is something I want to do since a long time. I might include it into my routine.
I’ve only ever “won” once…and that story needs to complete re-write. But I have a few other stories I really want to complete. I’ve only ever gotten “started” on them.
