3 Days In... oof

First time joining a community like this but really hoping I can stay sober this time. So far on day 3, still feeling pretty shaky but got some more decent sleep! A win. Trying my best to keep myself distracted once the time of day I usually start drinking hits. If anyone has weird tips / tricks let me know <3

Hope you guys are doing well today. Lfg, we got this.

Welcome J.
I joined this community 6 years ago to get sober. Never joined a community like this before either. Being very active on here has been a HUGE tool in my sobriety. Have a good read around. Find some threads you like. Join in when you’re comfortable.

For me in my early days. I use to take 2 angry power walks a day listening to Eminem and some other bad ass rap kind of stuff. I was so angry I cannot drink like a normie. I’d walk till I was exhausted.

I’d also take afternoon showers around 5 pm. Happy hour. I’d sit in those steaming burning hot showers for 20 minutes or so and usually have a good cry. My emotions were all fucked up. Why can’t I drink like a normal person :sob: then I’d come downstairs pour a glass of sparkling water in my favorite wine glass and cook a nice dinner at home.

Some nights I’d even clean the bathrooms. I had so much pent up energy.

I’m glad you’re here.

My anger power walks are currently limited by snow, BUT I will definitely be doing some crying in the shower. And sparkling water in a wine glass sounds absolutely fantastic!! Will definitely give that a try tonight when the craving really starts kicking in

Welcome @Doolittle !

I’ve had many of the same strategies as others on here.
-it’s good to have some good quality non-alcoholic beverages around (sparking water is a great one too). Others find that candy helps sometimes too.

-keep busy with that extra time that would be going to get a drink, or chilling out with a drink. Housework, planning your schedule, reaching out to friends and family, etc are all great things during the times where grabbing a drink would be ‘normal’. Checking on here, as frequently as needed, is also GREAT!

-on rare days where I was home alone after work, sometimes I would put a picture of my family in front of the fridge where I used to keep my beer. I caught myself a few times walking towards the fridge on autopilot, and had to stop and refresh my awareness.

-overly obvious tip, yeah, but it’s important to be aware before you go to events where alcohol is involved, and have a strategy for staying no and leaving the event sober - in advance. For me, someone handing me an open drink got me a few times, which I am grateful to have evolved past as an issue.

-For me in the early days, I would promise to myself to go to bed sober every night, and keep focused on that goal throughout the day.

Good luck on your sober journey!

Going to a meeting at the time when you normally start drinking

Keep yourself occupied plan your days ahead of time so you always know what you’re going to be doing so you don’t have idle time

To me those are all expert level suggestions

@Dazercat had some great input too

I also lived by this: Feel the urge? HALT. Ask yourself, Am I hungry, angry, lonely or tired? You can do something about those things. For the sake of sobriety, stop and take care of that first. They can easily bring on the humming sensation to pick up, and just as easily be fixed.

Hungry? Have a snack.
Angry? Step aside, cool off, reach out to another sober person.
Lonely? Hop on here or call friends/family. Maybe just ask how others are doing.
Tired? Sleep! Or at least acknowledge you’re tired, and resolve to let it go until you’ve rested.

Really glad you’re here and working hard to build a better future for yourself! This forum has really helped me–I’ve had sober stints before, but they never felt like lasting things until now. Just reading through the threads realizing that I’m not alone and that people before me have done it is a huge help. Take it 5 minutes at a time if you have to, but you can do this! Check in here whenever you need, we’ve got your back.

Welcome!!
