I personally haven’t resorted to medication to help quit alcohol but I really hope it will help you and will keep my fingers firmly crossed for you
I took it many many years ago. It would have done its job if I let it. I just don’t think I was ready to quit. I would take it for a week or so and then stop and go back to drinking. The medicine can be helpful if you are truly ready to stop. I took Chantix to quit smoking and I have been a non smoker for 6 years now. I was tired of smoking and I really wanted to stop. I had tried patches and gum, neither were helpful and that’s why I went the medicine way.
The key factor for any medicine to help us is you really truly wanting to stop
I used Antabuse a few times. Each time, I felt it gave me the confidence to not drink that day. But like @Runningfree, I would at some point decide to drink again, and stop taking it.
When I got permanently sober, I started by going back on Antabuse. After 4 weeks, I developed side effects, dizziness, and I had to stop taking it. But now I really wanted sobriety, and I was desperate. So I returned to AA, only this time, I did what they told me to do.
Antabuse or any other medicine is only a tool. They cannot of themselves bring out the changes in thought and feeling and attitude and behavior, they cannot engender a spiritual experience, they cannot cure my alcoholism. But they can give me a break, relax me from worries about drinking and allow me to focus, if I really want to, on building my sobriety.
Sounds like you’ve been through hell. Come on back and join the living, stay with us.
