Good morning everyone, today is my first day towards recovery. My entire life has been build around drinkin. The crazy part is i have been able to control it i never drink during the day. Only every night after work and the weekends.’i need to change my habits. Anyone in the same boat? Looking forward to interacting with you all.
Welcome back and success to you. Speaking for myself, I wouldn’t say I was able to control my drinking because I never drank till after work.
Over the years the amount I drank got ever more and I’m sure at some point I’d have started having a ‘recovery drink’ in the morning if I didn’t stop drinking totally. Which I did.
Congrats on your choice to be sober. Stick with it, stick with us, I promise you it’s worth more than you can imagine.
Welcome back! I know for myself, I always knew I had an issue…even tho I was a single Mom who raised a daughter, bought a house, held my jobs, put myself thru university, paid my bills, etc. I still had a horrible relationship with alcohol that over time got worse. Of course being the drunk that I was, I kept drinking. Right now is always a great time to stop drinking and get sober. We don’t need to hit some awful low to work on making our lives less chaotic and our mental and physical health better.
The journey is hard and worth it!!!
Hi im 3 days in and not going to lie finding it quite difficult atm. Had some great advise off of people on here though. One thing I read all the time and something I am turning into a mantra of sorts is I am not drinking today, I’ll sort tomorrow tomorrow.
I agree! Taking it one day, one hour, one minute, one second at a time if need be. Focus on today. And yes, use distraction…being on here, taking a walk, sleeping, exercising, a puzzle or book, mindless movie, a meeting…whatever gets you thru. Just do.not.drink. You can do this!!
Believing you have some sense of control is probably part of the reason you have spent so long struggling to get sober?
Your profile says you joined talking sober nearly 10 years ago and several posts are very much the same as this in essence.
If you want to quit for good and be sober, its not such a cliche thing to actually admit your powerlessness over alcohol and that you are infact NOT in control of it.
What do you do? What is your plan? Do/have you gone to AA or have any program that you’ve tried before?
I thought i was in control. Ive got everything I ever wanted in life. Happily married with beautiful healthy children. Nice house and good career. I thought I was in control of everything. Drink every night. Work every day. Wasn’t until I tried to quit that I realised how little did I have control. It is the hardest and best thing ive ever done was to quit drinking. But first I had to be honest to myself about what power it held over me and put aside my ego bullshit about just being a man thats earned his beer from working hard that day.
This is an odd definition of control. I’d say clinging to this belief is a lack of control. You’ve been engages with this forum off and on for 10 years. Just a quick review of your posts indicates a pretty severe issue with alcohol. You aren’t doing yourself any favors by minimizing it with the illusion of control.
What’s your plan this time around?
You control shit.
I recommend rehab and a plan. that’s far beyond changing habits. Your alcoholism is not a bunch of habits, you are addicted. free will concerning use of alcohol left you long ago and will never return. you can choose recovery but that’s hard work, at least you have to put in the same time & effort as in drinking & hangovers. Your choice.
