AA Meetings in GTA

I have never attended an AA meeting but after some realization and only a few days back in sobriety I realize I may need other tools to keep me from picking up again.
any members from the Toronto area that can share with me their experience at certain times and locations I could find some support?

Good on you for deciding to go to a meeting. I was scared but when I got the courage up, I went in, sat in the back listening, and I immediately felt like I finally found my people.

There’s a great app called meeting guide, it’s blue with a white folding chair. You put in your location and it lists all local meetings by day and time.

Im not sure if they still print the hard copy meeting book, but if you look up Toronto meetings online you can find meetings that are close to you and in your area!

There are womens/mens meetings if you feel more comfortable, and an open meeting generally means all are welcome (so even if you wamted to bring a support person who is not from AA or a drinker who wamts to quit) - these usually have a speaker (someone who gets up and tells their experience - what it was like, strength & hope - what its like now. Closed meetings are just for those in AA (or who are curious about it themselves) and are usually more discussion based.

AA not only saved my life, it gave me so many tools - patience, acceptance and a willingness to be open. It helped me to get in touch wirh myself and others, and helped me to see the circles I was goinf in not just with alcohol, but in other areas of my life. I found navigating AA felt a bit intimidating at times, because there are quite a few people in the GTA and so there can be different opinions about how to “do” AA, and some can be a bit loud about it. For me, it was just about accepting we’re all on a journey, i wanted to be sober and was willing to do ANYTHING and the people here were those i could relate to.

It cannot hurt to try, and in the end it could be the key to saving your life - it didnt just help me put down alcohol, it gave me sooooo much more. I found those in AA who had what I wanted, gravitated toward them and for those who maybe didnt necessarily have what I wanted I tried to rest my mind and still see what they had to share…

Only thing thats required to go is a desire to stop drinking. Thats it. The 12 steps are simple and gave me a new way of life…if you feel its not for you, that is okay - it may be that you arent ready or ready to accept the program, but it may mean youre searching for another way - just because AA doesnt fit does not mean you are not alcoholic/have a use issue, that you cant get sober/be a non-drinker, and that theres anything wrong witb you! Its a journey, we all have to find our way. AA offers the opportunity for connection and not feeling alone, if you find that…its a beautoful thing.

I wish you tons of luck, and pray for you on your journey

Thank you! This reply honestly brought tears to my eyes. Another day down, ready to face tomorrow. Will keep you posted!

I went to my first meeting tonight with a friend that is 17 years sober. It was many members anniversaries and I really enjoyed the speaker who shared. I picked up my desire medallion and felt so much warmth and support.
I will have 30 days on Thursday.

I thought GTA meant Grant Theft Auto. Sorry, I feel very American now. Anyways glad there’s meetings in Toronto!

Lol! I Googled what is GTA? And the main thing that came up was Grans Theft Auto. It might also be because Google knows I’m on the other side of the continent. Glad a meeting was found and that it went well!
