Alcohol withdrawal - delirium tremens

Hi, I am on day 3, My symptoms so far are heart palpitations and anxiety, insomnia and lucid dreams. But has anyone developed dts days later without the host of other symptoms? I’m so scared I’m going to go through it alone with my kids in the house. I do have medicine to help but I just want to know if they can appear without having tremors, nausea, etc…

Thank you

My dr prescribed me medicine. I have already spoken to them, I’m just looking for experience from others

Like everyone said, it differs from person to person and only a medical professional Should give you an answer. But hang in there! You said you spoke to the doctor and he gave you medicine. Do it ultimately depends on how long you been drinking, how much you have been drinking, age, and how many other times he would quit…. How much were you drinking?

About a 1/5 of vodka a day for the last year. I never presented the normal detox symptoms though, tremors, vomiting etc, which is why they said they felt comfortable sending me home with Librium. The anxiety is the worst for me and now I’ve worked myself up so I’ve spent way too much time on the internet scaring the shit outta myself

How was about to ask you a reading the Internet. I was the same way and scaring myself as well. That is quite a bit of alcohol to consume every day. Were you honest with your doctor? I think the fact that you’re able to communicate via phone/computer is a good sign right there. You are right at that stage 3 to 5 that might get a little rough… Keep your phone nearby and have someone call and check on you once in a while…

Since your doctor is ok with what you’re doing I’ll comment. I went through crazy withdrawals. Vomited every fifteen minutes for 24 hours. When I turned the lights on in my room it reminded be me of being tied down JasonBourne style in a mental hospital. I drank a handle of vodka about every three days.

I had zero meds that first day. The second day I called a nurse to come to my house and give me an IV. It had anti nausea med in it, pain killer and b12. Not sure what they were but they helped. I was super dehydrated so I needed the fluids.

My kids were down stairs that first day. The rest of the week I took melatonin to sleep and it seemed to help mellow me out.

I feel extremely lucky my withdrawal symptoms were sooooooo bad because I’m scared to death to ever go through them again. I’d probably have to be court ordered before I’d go through detox again. The first time I did it was so easy mostly because I didn’t drink as much so I didn’t appreciate the detox process. Now I’m so scared no way I want to do it again.

Agree with others. With cases like these, it’s best to consult your doctor, give them an update on how you’re doing.

Yes, shakes usually subside after 3 or 4 days. It depends on the individual and their history though. And as you probably know, the shakes can be a precursor your doctor might want to know about.

I did have one medically assisted withdrawal where they prescribed me only anti seizure meds.

For me I felt physically stable after about 3 days. Maybe another couple weeks for the major anxiety to pass. (My baseline anxiety is now much, much better in long term sobriety!)

Definitely a Dr is needed I just went through it & yes I have shakes on day 4/5.

I never had the shakes or vomiting even the first day. I have a history with anxiety disorders and recently it has gotten worse and obviously drinking is a huge benefactor to that, which I why I decided to quit and went to a Dr. I’m feeling really good today and believe I just went through a mild withdrawal so I was very lucky. But I do have people that I have reached out to just in case anything changes. Thank you for checking in :slightly_smiling_face:

That’s great! You got this! I’m only talking from experience because I quit so many times I lost count, each time gets more and more difficult and more and more dangerous. It’s called the Kindling effect, and for me, it was very very real. I’m glad you’re OK and on your way to feeling better and better every day now! Great job!

How are you feeling my friend?

I’ve been ok, I started drinking again this weekend so day 1 starts all over. I’m disappointed in myself but realize this is not the life I want to live

Sometimes quitting is like knocking over a pop machine you don’t get it on the first try do you have to get it rocking! I do hope you do it because it does feel a lot better. I’m here for you man!

I missed the reply - I’ve stayed sober. How you doing?

At 4 days you may need some medical intervention to feel better. Hang in there.
