Alcoholic fisherman in recovery

This is me standing on a load of mankillers last season aboard the slave ship. Sailing into the perfect formula for destructive relapse.

Jason, I absolutely love following your journey! I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again.

When you have these days off are you able to paint at all? I can imagine that so much changes during the work season and I’m genuinely interested how life shifts for you.

As the season progresses, i will crab alot less. If i wasnt working today. I would paint. Ive got several in progress.

Thats to magic of painting for me. Its light weight. Easy to set up. And canvases are easy to store. I can travel and take my art with me.

I want to become a mural artist. Paint seascapes and marine life scenes on buildings, inside homes. And canvas too.

Chainsaw carving is a medium i enjoy. Im good at it. But the last thing i want to do on a day off is wrestle logs and a chainsaw. I have a big storage unit for of work to finish. Getting settled into a place where i can carve again is in my goals.

Previous boat, id be in too much pain to do much of anything except try and heal up a little for the next trip.

Im getting older. I cant fish tough forever. Im bored of building houses which is my other trade.

Id like to be able to be make a living as an artist long term goal. And own a salmon/tuna boat. Between them both id do pretty good.

Its been the goal for a while now.

Ive been spinning my wheels being a drunk.

Great to hear you’re doing great Bud! I read your status updates, time seems to be FLYING! I’m like he’s at 70 days already. But I know life moves quick. I’m glad your in a better headspace nowadays. Your paintings and art is amazing! Can’t wait to see what’s on deck! (*insert fishing pun here )You’re kicking ass and taking names. Keep up the good work.

Saw there are 3 missing fishermen near Coos bay. Just checking in to see if you are ok.

Yeah, i found out about it when we landed the boat a couple hours ago. I was so distraught that i left my gear on the boat and had to come back and get my phone so i could use the internet to find out more info.

The pacific miner is the vessels name. Its her 2nd crab season. New 38 foot boat. Its a port orford boat. Thats my port.

Im friends with the whole crew. Ime really good friend with one of them Matt Herrmann is his name. I crabbed with him last year. We did salmon cod and tuna together also. Good guy. Loved fishing. Recovering herion addict. Got his shit together so he could be a good dad.

Steve and adam are the other guys. I cant remember their last names.

Steve somehow got the skipper job. Hes a great guy and loves fishin. We werent good friends. I liked him.

Hes inexperienced. My guess is that he made a bad decision and crossed coos bar bar at the wrong time. We looked at rhe tide and it was the worst possible tide to try and cross.

Adam and i fished for the same asshole. Not at the same time. We drank beer and talked shit many times. Hes a good guy.

It doesnt look good. Im betting they are dead. I came to check in here try and keep my sobriety strength as i head home past the bars.

It triggered a desire to drink. Im not going to… just needed to vent here before i head home.

My phones going to die. Ill check in when i get home.

It must have been terrifying! I crabbed out of that port once. I had a close call one morning.

We were headed out and the waves got so big and steep all we could do is keep the boat facing them and hope they didnt break on us. Every one looked like it was.going to. They broke on both sides of us. Theres a channel in the bar thats deeper. We were on top of that. If we missed the channel. We would have been swimming. Its the only time I’ve put on a survival suit.

I swore id never crab out of there again, and I havent.

Being stuck in a capsized boat being pounded against the rocks by big breaking waves would be horrific. I cant wait to hear the story from Matt.

Over Sushi, not cocktails lol
