To preface: I am a US citizen, and I currently live in the US, but I’ve lived elsewhere enough to be able to look at Americans as an outsider - to my great amusement.
I did a Spartan race yesterday - with the advice of my therapist, we figure that if I can do something hard and really mindfully capture that feeling of accomplishment, I can help train myself to feel the same way about quitting porn. Overall, pretty successful so far. I really enjoyed myself.
I’d figured the hype was mostly just the commercial, and that it’d be like any other sporting event I’d gone to where people are there for some exercise and to push themselves.
I was not expecting muddy, insane women and men who actually acted as if they were warriors of ancient Sparta, training to fight back the Persian invasion. I was not expecting people to climb partway up an obstacle and scream like mad while going the rest of the way. I was not expecting a group of 90% Americans with likely no ties to Greek or even Mediterranean culture to feel such an identity with this ancient civilization that they would tear their shirts off and howl like dogs before crawling under 50m of barbed wire.
Americans are WILD and I kind of love it.
