Anthem of the Day (Part 2)

First 5 albums, undisputable classics.

They have their moments here and there afterward, but nothing beats the first 5.

I couldn’t agree more,

I think the thing with Metallica has been their staying power, like we talk about classic bands Zepplin, the Beatles etc and all the iconic albums they put out. But the time frame was much shorter.

Metallica has stretched their discography over 30 years plus and kinda changed with the times, during the load reload era, that post grunge sound was all the rage, 2000s nu metal. The the newer metal bands kinda brought back that thrash sound but more rock friendly so they kinda adapted to keep relevant do I like all of it. Nah.

Even with Black Album, they made a very obvious and conscious choice to move towards groove metal, less thrash, with the advent of bands like Pantera etc.

Load/ReLoad have their merits. Devil’s Dance, Fuel, Memory Remains, Hero of the Day, etc.

Back in 2009 or 2010 (whenever Death Magnetic came out) I was thrilled to see that return to thrash we’d all been waiting for. I got goosebumps the first time I went through the first single from that one. That album is far from their best work, but it was a nice return to what they do best.

Surgical recovery or not, I just couldn’t bring myself to not move ahead as planned. A bit of standard pain reaching for these off the wall, but not the type of pain to be worried about. All these years of fitness stuff, you start to learn what you need to listen to from your body and what is acceptable to push thorough.

It’s Black May, baby. Quite a few this month I’m excited for. Good mix.

  • Beach Fossils - Clash the Truth, 2013.
  • Fleetwood Mac - Mirage, 1982.
  • A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory, 1991.
  • Lou Reed - Transformer, 1972.
  • Misfits - Legacy of Brutality, 1985. Compilation.
  • GĆ”bor Szabó - Dreams, 1968.
  • Talking Heads - Fear of Music, 1979.
  • Eyedea & Abilities - First Born, 2001.
  • B-52s - Whammy!, 1983.

EDIT:

:notes: COLOR MONTH FUN FACT :notes:
Black May represents the 3rd appearance of The B-52s, and the 2nd appearance of Talking Heads

Although Lou Reed was featured last month as a member of The Velvet Underground, this is his 1st appearance as a solo artist in this monthly exercise I’m doing

Yeah St Anger was (and remains) a big ol’ oooooof for me. Bought it the day it came out, and even stoned me couldn’t find a shred of anything interesting.

But in fairness – they had the stones to try something new, it just didn’t work…much like their dreadful album w/ Lou Reed. The band was also in great personal turmoil at the time.

I’d love to see them live, but I’m afraid Metallica LLC is a bit too big for their britches these days. I ain’t paying those ticket costs.

This album is dope! Sober dope of course

About Metallica, i’ll see them live in June at the Hellfest, can’t wait, even if I dislike almost everything they’ve done after the Black Album :joy:

Black May - Solitary Man, Johnny Cash.
First video I posted on this forum was from this album - I won’t back down.
Also Johnny Cash for Black May - The Man Comes Around.

The Kent State events were one of the catalysts for the formation of DEVO. A few of the band members went there, one had a friend shot/killed.

Editing to add the Neil Young ā€œOhioā€ that has the accounting of what happened included in the video.

Second video is from the 50th commemoration.

Shared the album version on Froot Loops before. Just in love with this song and this version. And this lady.

I find it hard. Hard to be soft.

Black May #1

Beach Fossils - Clash the Truth, 2013.

I was really into this album for a while when I first heard it (2015? Wild guess), then sorta forgot about it/the band. Last listened to this record on Halloween 2018. I know the precise day on this one, ha. No particular reason…I just do.

Upon revisiting, it holds up. Consistent throughout, and while not terribly diverse it refrains from overstaying its welcome. Reminds me of late 80s indie shit. I had actually never looked up a video of them live, I quite like this one.

Also, if you are not familiar: that pink strip is called an obi and is not part of the actual album art. It’s just a paper strip/loop that goes around the jacket. They can be kind of annoying, actually. As far as I know (not much), they’re more frequently seen on Japanese records (this is not a Japanese record).

This one is in my workout playlist (along with like 3 other Black Album songs and 2 dozen Metallica songs altogether, lol)

But I never skip this one. When the guitars drop out right after the guitar solo, and it’s just Jason and Lars for like 20 seconds – it’s so damn good. Great bassline outright. Jason doesn’t get enough credit.

Glad to see you pop up, man.

Although I hold the Black Album as #5 in their 5 best albums, I do feel it is the best Metallica album for working out.

Like…when I’m out for a run at 5am, it’s dark and cold, it’s just me and whatever creatures of the night I run into that I hopefully see before they see me…

and then Of Wolf and Man comes on the workout shuffle. You look up to see the pre-dawn silhouette of the mountains, rhythmic puffs of your breath obscure the view for a few nanoseconds here and there.

That gives you some hype juice.
