I heard this was about one of his cats that was missing. I have found no proof to back this up but that is always what I think of now when I hear it.
It’s originally an Appalachian folk song from the 1800’s. I’m pretty sure back then it wasn’t about a lost cat. But it sure is possible Kurt Cobain told this story about the song at some point.
