Hello friends. I’ve been struggling to stay sober for more than a week here and there but I am desperate to get to a place of long term sobriety. I have been talking to my recovery support worker and am due to receive a prescription for acamprosate, which can help with eliminating cravings for alcohol . Do any of you use it? How do you find it? Thank you for any comments.
Hi there and welcome Therese
I personally haven’t taken it but do know about it from others and also looked into it when I was trying to quit.
From what I understand, Campral (Acamprosate) is best started once you have stopped drinking and been through detox.
If you do drink while taking it, it will dramatically increase the effects of the alcohol and decrease its proposed success overall.
I’ve heard mixed feedback about it but those that were successful, were fully committed to giving it a go, were monitored closely by the doctor and combined it with other supports such as AA, IOP (intensive outpatient program), counselling or similiar. It can potentially reduce the physical cravings but the mental obsession will need to be tackled through hard work on your part.
If you click on the magnifying symbol above and type either acamprosate or campral in the search bar, previous discussions around this medication will appear for you to read through.
Again welcome to the forum and hope to see you around more often
Hi Becsta. Thank you so much for getting back to me. I will search the page for earlier replies. And thank you for your welcome. X
No problem at all! This is a great forum that has played a major part in my sobriety, lots of support, friendships and helpful advice lurking around in these threads
I have used it, twice. The first time it didn’t help. Actually at the time I wanted Antibuse type drugs, and was frustrated to have been “fobbed off” and had the attitude that it wouldn’t do anything, and lo and behold it didn’t. Later I was more resolved to quit under my own steam, and wanted Campral as an extra mental push, and I certainly had fewer cravings but whether it was the Campral or my change in attitude, I don’t know.
[quote=“Tree1, post:1, topic:136982”] found this interesting facts acamprosate,Acamprosate is used along with counseling and social support to help people who have stopped drinking large amounts of alcohol (alcoholism) to avoid drinking alcohol again. Drinking alcohol for a long time changes the way the brain works. Acamprosate works by helping the brains of people who have drunk large amounts of alcohol to work normally again. Acamprosate does not prevent the withdrawal symptoms that people may experience when they stop drinking alcohol. Acamprosate has not been shown to work in people who have not stopped drinking alcohol or in people who drink large amounts of alcohol and also overuse or abuse other substances such as street drugs or prescription medication
