So I have tried to stop drinking, and stumbled quite a bit, I have noticed that these flavoured sparkling water drinks are quite triggering…. I find myself pounding them like they are white claws or something. Am I the only one? I find that I crave something sweet and water is good but doesn’t quite cut it. Trying to stay away from pop so I figured these drinks would be a sure fire win. alas I think I may need to find something else
My theory is it could be prolong dehydration? I down like a pint of water easily if I’ve forgot to hydrate and being off alcohol makes it easier to your body tell you what it actually needs instead of drowning the signals
worth having a look at vitamins and food supplements, as in potassium and magnesium helps with muscle cramps. I love a nice cold San pellegrino ![]()
Thinkig does it trigger gravings for the white claws? And is it just the fizzy water? I’ve been hamming down foods for most of my life and trying to be more mindful of it and actually enjoy what I’m eating
did treat myself to a water filter jug, game Changer!
Hey! So you’re definitely not the only one, i am also a sparkling water enthusiast and I drank my fair share of white claws and I avoid black cherry flavored anything for that particular reason. I would suggest switching to regular water and adding your own flavoring with flavor drops if drinking the carbonated water is triggering for you this early on. It would be best to adjust as needed because even though you are getting your hydration with water, if it’s triggering these thoughts of potentially using I would highly suggest switching to whatever else would help keep you sober and keep your mind off of booze. Right now preserving your sobriety is the number one priority. Best of luck to you! ![]()
You are definitely not alone. Lots of us are going thru or went thru the same. Our body is used to the alcohol carbs and craves sugar. I indulged my sweet tooth my 1st year or so. I figured it was better than alcohol and I could deal with the sugar issue when ready. Likely not thr brightest way of looking at it, but it worked for me. I also chugged water and flavored fizzy water.
Maybe some sugar free Life Savers or fizzy water with more of a flavor? Better yet, have you tried fruit? Green grapes are pretty yummy. Bananas. I started baking up a storm with lower cal versions of cookies, sweet breads, cupcakes….kept me busy and satisfied.
Taking walks or working out also took my mind off drinking.
Keep us posted!!
this is what i do as well
Glad to know I am not alone. I crave something sweeter than just water, and if I think about San Pellengrino or or fizzy drinks I don’t spiral, but it’s like the act of drinking them maybe? Sitting around a fire drinking out of a tall slender can? does that make sense?
Absolutely it makes sense. Maybe switch to hot cocoa? Or tea? Or just plain water? Or maybe avoid sitting around the fire for awhile til you feel more solid, which does happen with a lot of time.
Why not switch it up and take a decaf or regular coffee and go for a walk my friend, like @SassyRocks is suggesting
@JMS19 I’d do something different that won’t remind you of drinking at all, you could even take a few mints with you and listen to your headphones or bring a journal and find somewhere to sit for awhile. Get creative, take out your phone and do some photography, or walk and pray.
For me I did go hard on the sparkling water when i first quit. Sometimes even in a fancy glass. Think it took a year for me to taper that off. In my opinion, they have no sugar or caffeine and are way better for you than alcohol and if it keeps you from drinking then you are winning. I also spent a good 6 months eating lots of ice cream as I needed something cold and sweet. The intensity for these things does go away.

You most definitely are not alone ![]()
I have the same issue now I crave sugary drinks. So I do black cherry soda water, bubly, to be specific and it helps a little. More recently I’ve taken to eating fruit. Strawberries and whipped cream. But the one that gives the most sweet satisfaction without the added calories is purple grapes. You can even freeze them and have them as a snack as well. Good luck.
Thanks everyone for your stories. Definitely makes me feel a little less “weird”. I had another fire today (trying to do some yard clean up to keep busy). This time though did not have anything to drink during the fire and it was fine, no cravings. Had a san pellegrino with dinner and it was fine, so it’s really the combination of both that seems to be the trigger but split up is fine.
3 years sober from alcohol here. I was cooking last night and found a bottle of Mirin (Japanese rice wine) in my cupboard. I opened it to sniff it to see if I wanted to add it to my cucumber salad and immediately poured it down the drain.
Tastes change but if it triggers your brain in any old way steer clear.
